1.5 Major difference between SC11CB and ordinary 121

Major improvements and designs of parts of SC11CB diesel engine are as follows:

(1) Cylinder head design: The intake path is

provided with spiral intake vortex, and the
water jacket core is of an integral structure.
The intake and exhaust valves and the injector
are moved to the exhaust side by 1.8mm. To
increase the intake vortex when the valve
openness is low, an eccentric chamfer is
provided in the cylinder head bottom valve
seat ring hole.

(2) Engine block design: The engine block design

mainly includes two aspects: 1. To ensure the
uniform cooling of various cylinders, the
engine block water holes are designed to have
different sizes. Sizes of these 24 water holes
are finally determined through the CFD
calculation of the cooling system. The
diameter of top water hole is changed to be
6-17mm. 2. To ensure the installation of Px
pump, the mounting bracket is improved.

(3) Power cylinder assembly: The piston is made of aluminum

alloy with low expansion coefficient. Its top ring position is
elevated, and its junk diameter is reduced. The first ring
groove is provided with a trapezoid groove structure, and the
apron is of a mid-convex and vari-ellipticity profile. The
combustion chamber has 3 design options. The first ring is a
ladder twisted barrel faced ring, and its surface is coated with
anti-wear material, with good matching with the cylinder liner.
The second ring is the taper-face negative twisted ring. The
third ring is a combined oil ring containing inner support
spring. The cylinder liner is the GOE320 high-boron cylinder
liner, and the abrasion pattern on the surface can help to
reduce the engine oil consumption.

(4) Distribution mechanism: By evaluating the distribution mechanism of C6121 model, the distribution
mechanism of this product has been comprehensively appraised through test and calculation, with
the improvement scheme proposed. Based on the reanalysis and rearrangement of intake and
exhaust systems, the air distribution timing and cam contours are optimized, and the kinetic and
kinematic analysis and calculation have been performed on the new mechanism to finalize the
design.

(5) Fuel system: The P pump and P nozzle, PX

fuel pump, RSVH/901 speed governor and
return fuel injector made in China are fitted.
The fuel pump is the PX reinforced pump
manufactured by Shanghai Denso Fuel
Injection Co., Ltd, with the permissible
pressure at the pump end of 1150bar. The fuel
injector is also provided by Shanghai Denso
Fuel Injection Co., Ltd, and the coupling is
supplied by Denso Corporation. To ensure the
safe fuel return, a unique design of injector
body is provided.

4 Chapter IV Installation of PX pump and fuel level regulation technology

4.1 P Fuel supply timing adjustment of PX pump
4.1.1Localization of the first cylinder piston at the compression stroke upper dead center
The inspection and adjustment of the fuel pump fuel supply timing start from checking whether the first
cylinder piston is located at the compression stroke upper dead center. Perform the inspection as per
following instructions and steps. When determining the rotating direction of the crankshaft, observe from the
engine flywheel end; namely, the crankshaft shall rotate counterclockwise when the engine is working.
To determine the upper dead center, rotate the crankshaft in the designated direction to ensure that the free
clearance of the timing gear system has been eliminated.

(1) Remove the valve chamber cover, and

prevent the entry of pollutants into the valve
mechanism.
(2) Fit the turning tool, and remove the plug at
the timing hole on the flywheel housing.
(3) Rotate the flywheel counterclockwise to
close the first cylinder intake and exhaust
valves (at this moment, there is clearance
between the first cylinder intake & exhaust
valve and the rocker arm).

(4) Gradually screw the flywheel timing bolts

into the threaded holes on the flywheel via
the timing holes on the flywheel housing. If
the bolt can be screwed in, the first cylinder
piston shall be located at the compression
stroke upper dead center. If the flywheel has
passed the upper dead center, rotate the
flywheel back by at least 60°(this step is to
eliminate the free clearance between the
gear engaged teeth). Then slowly rotate the
flywheel counterclockwise till the timing bolt
can be smoothly screwed into the flywheel.

(5) When the first cylinder piston is located at the compression stroke upper dead center. At this
moment, the first cylinder intake and exhaust valves shall be closed, and there shall be a clearance
between the intake & exhaust valve and the rocker arm; otherwise, the sixth cylinder is located at
the compression stroke upper dead center. Remove the timing bolt, rotate the crankshaft by 360°
(slowly rotate it when approaching the termination), and then fit the timing bolt; at this moment, the
first cylinder piston shall be located at the compression stroke upper dead center.

SC11CB Diesel Engine Service Manual
4.1.1 Check and adjustment of fuel supply timing
Determine the timing of injection pump after the engine first cylinder compression upper dead center is
determined.
A. Adjust the fuel injection pump fuel supply timing as per following steps when the fuel pump is not
fitted on the diesel engine:

(1) Determine that the first cylinder piston is

located at the upper dead center, and insert
the flywheel timing bolt into the timing hole
on the flywheel housing.

(2) Before installing the fuel injection pump into

the diesel engine, rotate the fuel pump
camshaft, and insert the φ6mm timing pin
into the timing hole corresponding to the
coupling and indicating plate.

(3) Fit the fuel injection pump drive gear, thread

the timing pin through the gear timing hole,
and then adjust the gear. Apply a clockwise
torque onto the fuel injection pump drive
gear to fully engage them. Meanwhile,
thread these 4 pressing screws through the
gear pressing plate hole and gear hole.
Tighten them diagonally by two steps to the
final torque of 50±5N.m.

Timing pin

(4) Remove the fuel pump timing pin and the

flywheel timing bolt.
B. Adjust the fuel injection pump fuel supply
timing as per following steps when the fuel
pump is fitted on the diesel engine:
(1) Confirm that the first cylinder piston is
located at the upper dead center, open the
fuel pump gear hole covering plate on the
gear housing, and insert a φ6mm timing pin
into the gear and fuel pump flange
positioning hole.

- 41 -
SC11CB Diesel Engine Service Manual

(2) Localize the flywheel positioning bolt in the

timing hole of the flywheel housing. If the
timing bolt can be fitted into this hole, the
fuel supply timing of the injection pump is
correct; if it can’t be fitted into the hole, the
timing is incorrect. At this moment, adjust
the fuel supply timing of injection pump as
per following steps.

(3) Undo these 4 bolts of the fuel pump gear,

and insert a φ6mm timing pin into the fuel
pump timing hole.

(4) Slowly rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise

till the flywheel timing bolt can be screwed into
the flywheel housing timing hole

- 42 -
SC11CB Diesel Engine Service Manual

(5) Rotate the fuel pump gear, and align the

gear threaded hole with the one on the fuel
pump flange, and tighten these 4 pressing
screws diagonally by two steps to obtain a
final torque of 50±5N.m.
(6) After the installation, remove these two
timing pins, rotate the crankshaft by two
turns, and the timing pin shall be still able to
be inserted into timing pin holes on both
sides; at this moment, the fuel injection
timing shall be fully correct.

(7) Fit the fuel injection pump gear hole

covering plate onto the front gear housing,
tighten it using the nut to a final torque of
27±7N.m.

specifications.

SC11CB diesel engine shall use the diesel engine oil above CF class. Where the engine is used in
the construction machines, the CD-class engine oil can be used instead of CF-class engine oil if
it is unavailable. For most areas in China, it is recommended to use 15W/40CF-4 engine oil. If the
ambient temperature is lower than -15 , to facilitate the startup and provide sufficient engine oil,
10W/40CF-4 engine oil can be selected. In cold regions, if the diesel engine always works at an ambient
temperature of lower than -23℃, and no heat insulation measures are provided after the diesel engine
stops operation, the 5W/50SJ/CF-4 engine oil possessing sufficient low-temperature characteristics
shall be used, or the one-grade oil corresponding to the ambient temperature shall be selected. The
viscosity class of the engine oil mainly depends on the minimum and maximum ambient temperatures
when the diesel engine is working.
The engine oil viscosity and applicable ambient temperatures listed in the table below are used for
reference. Under cold weather conditions, before startup, withdraw the oil dipstick. If the engine oil can
freely drip from the dipstick, the engine oil can be normally circulated; otherwise the viscosity level
corresponding to the lower ambient temperature shall be selected.

6 Chapter VI Troubleshooting
6.1 General requirements on troubleshooting
In the case of diesel engine fault, the user or repairer shall identify features, properties and causes of the
fault through careful observation. If the fault in question will influence the normal and safe operation of
the diesel engine, stop the engine immediately for inspection. If the safety will not be compromised or the
cause can't be identified immediately, unload the diesel engine to have it run at the reduced speed and
zero load, and continue observation and analysis.
The fault is usually resulted by several causes, and is always varying. Only a full and deep insight into
the fault and careful analysis can find out the true cause against which the proper measures shall be
taken.
In this chapter, certain common faults and their possible causes and solutions have been provided for
general guidance and reference. In the operation, do take actual conditions into account. Those
operators who do not know the property or cause of the fault or are unfamiliar with the operation and
maintenance requirements of the diesel engine, do not repair the engine.
Where any major fault occurs, and it is necessary to perform an overall repair on the diesel engine, do
have the engine repaired in the well-equipped workshop other than on the field.
