FORM TWO RME LESSON NOTES.

TOPIC: PUBERTY RITES.


Puberty is a stage in life between childhood and adulthood or a transition from childhood to
adulthood.
In girls it takes place between 9-14 years. For boys it is between 11-16 years.
At this stage, boys and girls undergo emotional and physical changes.
Rites are therefore performed to usher them into adulthood.

PHYSICAL CHANGES IN BOYS.


1. Increase in height and weight
2. Enlargement of testicles and penis.
3. Growth of hair around the pubic areas.
4. Voice deepens due to enlargement of the voice box.
5. Chest and shoulder become broader.
6. Development of acne and pimples on the face.

PHYSICAL CHANGES IN GIRLS.


1. Increase in height and weight.
2. Enlargement of breast.
3. Menstruation begins.
4. Pubic hair begins to grow on the genitals.
5. The pelvic girdle becomes wider.
6. The hips become wider while the waist becomes slimmer.

EMOTIONAL CHANGES DURING PUBERTY.


1. There is physical attraction to the opposite sex.
2. There is onset of sex drive therefore the desire for sex is strong.
3. They experience mood swings. Some may be very happy and quickly become angry or sad
over minor issues or comment.
4. There is the feeling of maturity and the desire for independence from their parents.
5. At puberty, young people become conscious of themselves and make themselves physically
pleasant an attractive.
