ACID VALUE OF FATTY ACIDS AND POLYMERIZED MATERIALS

Issue Date : 01 / 08 / 04 Replaces : First Issue Reviewed : / /

1. Revision:
First Issue

2. Introduction:
2.1. This method covers the determination of acid value and to all fatty acids and
polymerized Materials.

3. Definition:
3.1. Acid value means the number of milligrams of potassium hydroxide required
neutralize the acids in 1g of sample.

4. Reagents:
4.1.Purity of Reagent:
Analytical grade chemicals shall be used in all tests. Unless otherwise indicated,
it’s intended that all reagents shall conform to the specifications of the committee
on analytical reagents on the American chemical society, where such specification
are available.

4.2.Purity of Water:
Distilled Water must be used.

4.3 Ethyl Alcohol ( Absolute ).

4.4 Phenolphthalein indicator solution ( 10G/L).

4.5 Alcoholic Potassium Hydroxide standard solution (0.1N).

4.5.1 Take 5.6 gram of KOH in measuring Flask and add 1 litre of ethanol and
little
distilled water to the flask .

4.5.2 Standardize by titration against potassium hydrogen phthalate, using

phenolphthalein as indicator. This solution is approximately 0.1N but the exact
normality and use in calculation.

5. Procedure:

5.1 Take a knowing weight of the sample in conical flask and add 100 ml of solvent
mix and mixing well.

5.2 Add 0.5mL of the phenolphthalein indicator solution and triturate against, 0.1N
KOH or solution to the first pink color that persists for 30sec.

6. Calculation of Results:
6.1.Calculate the acid value as follows:
Acid value = ( V x N x 56.1) / S
Where:
V : Milliliters of KOH solution required for titration.
N : Normality of KOH solution.
S : Grams of sample used.
