The Synectic Model

Lesson Title: Synectic Analogies

Targeted Grade Level: 5th Grade

Academic Subject: English Language Arts

Lesson Goals:

Students will be able to think outside of the box and expand there thinking. The
student(s) will be able to problem solve and brainstorm when presented with any
obstacle.

Lesson Objectives:

 The student will learn to organize their brainstorming ideas, descriptions,


and thoughts about the chosen topic.
 The student will create their own comparisons from their brainstorming
responses.

Materials/Resources Needed:

 This lesson will require index cards


 This lesson will require markers
 This lesson will require paper

Lesson Components:

Phase I: I will start the class by describing childhood on an index card in front of
them and direct the student to write their own paragraph. Then I would ask the
students how they would define the word in their own words. Then we will open
the room for open dialogue for their description of the topic using words, all
answers considered.

Phase II: I will then ask the students to examine the list of words and name
somethings that remind them of as many of those words used. I will have student
come up and write their own word on the board.

Phase III: In this phase I will ask for their own personal analogies based on the topic
childhood that was chosen and tell me how it would be if they became the object.
Provide their opinion of how they would feel and write those on the board and why
they feel that way.

Phase IIII: This will be where the students create their own analogy as a group
based on all opinions considered.

Evaluation:

Students will be evaluated by their ability to brainstorm effectively and create


comparisons that are connected to the topic.
