One of my core beliefs is that patients prefer to maintain their own independence, and a similar
lifestyle to their earlier years; and this is something which I can strive to help them achieve as a
Health Care Assistant;
• Include and assist patients in planning their activities for the day by providing the selection of
activities so they can choose, and informing them of upcoming appointments or events, so
they feel their care is focused specifically for themselves;
• Provide personal care which is tailored to the preferences of patients such as: assisting early-
risers with getting up in the morning, allowing patients the flexibility of going to sleep later
than their usual bedtime, enabling patients to select baths or showers, encouraging patients
with doing their own personal care depending on their levels of ability and in accordance with
their care plan, and providing assistance as needed. As a Health Care Assistant, I want
patients to feel that I provide respectful care, and am protecting their dignity and
independence.

Following safety rules is a baseline for quality of care;

• Reading care plans and talking to team members before transferring patients. Asking for or
offering assistance to/from team members for tasks which require more than one person in
order to maximize the comfort and safety for patients, and to reduce the potential of injury to
health care workers;
• Check residents’ rooms and work areas for hazards such as spills, damaged furniture or
equipment, and reporting findings in accordance with standard procedures, thereby improving
the work environment and infection control;
• Ensure appropriate meals are distributed in accordance with patients’ nutritional
requirements. Assisting patients with positioning for mealtimes and eating meals, and
monitoring food consumption to ensure patients are comfortable, safe, and satisfied at
mealtimes.

I believe respecting patients’ privacy is of utmost importance;

• Respect privacy for patients with visitors, and close doors and blinds before providing
personal care as efforts to preserve patients’ dignity and build trust as a caregiver;
• Treat patients’ information strictly with professionalism to maintain confidentiality and protect
personal health information.

Supporting nurses is a crucial part of being a Health Care Assistant;

• Provide constant observation for patients who need ongoing support, and document details of
observations and care provided;
• Report problems and/or changes to the Registered Nurse as a frontline care person for
patients.
