Menjelaskan aplikasi bioteknologi di bidang Perikanan
BIOTECHNOLOGY IS
the manipulation of living organisms and organic material to serve human needs.

Using scientific methods with organisms to produce new products or new forms of
organisms

any technique that uses living organisms or substances from those organisms to make
or modify a product, to improve plants or animals, or to develop microorganisms for
specific uses.
WHY BIOTECH?

Nature has a rich source of variation ex. Beans

But we know nature does not have all of the traits (genetic variation)
we need
Biotechnology involves added new traits to a species
WHAT ARE THE STAGES OF
BIOTECHNOLOGY?
ANCIENT BIOTECHNOLOGY
• Related to food and shelter; includes
domestication

CLASSICAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
• Built on ancient biotechnology:
Fermentation promoted food
production, and medicine

MODERN BIOTECHNOLOGY
• Manipulates genetic information from
microorganisms: genetic engineering
IMPORTANT FINDING
Robert Hooke → Invented the compound light microscope

Antony van Leeuwenhoek → Discovered cells using a simple microscope

Gregor Johan Mendel → founder of genetics
Walter Sutton → Discovered Chromosomes

Thomas Hunt Morgan → Discovered how genes are transmitted through

chromosomes
Ernst Ruska → Invented the electron microscope

James Watson and Francis Crick → Discovered DNA

etc…….
APLICATION EXAMPLES:
Genetically modify organism
Gene knock out
Gene theraphy
Steam cell
Cloning
Kultur Jaringan
Etc …..

For fisheries?
IMPACTS OF GENETICALLY ENGINEERED CROPS
POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF TRANSGENIC ORGANISMS:
WHY SO MUCH POTENTIAL?
Genetic engineering provides a greater range of possibilities for
transferring desired traits into organisms.
A greater diversity of organisms may be modified
The quantity and quality of traits are limited by the identification
of useful genes and are not constrained by existing variation
among interbreeding relatives

The potential is biological novelty

ARE THEY GOOD OR BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT? GOOD,
ACCORDING TO THE PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY
NO, ACCORDING TO ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST GROUPS
AGRI BT PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET…
Global area under
transgenic crops is
seen growing.

The only transgenic crop

approved in India for
commercial cultivation is Bt
cotton.

Interestingly, the area under

Bt cotton in 2005 was only
500,000 hectares out of
over 9 million hectares
under total cotton crop.
