MOISTURE TEST STANDARD OPERATION PRODUCERE

DETERMINATION OF MOISTURE CONTENT IN USED OILS

SCOPE: Determination of Moisture present in the given oil sample.

METHOD: ASTM D 1744

REAGENT: Karl Fisher Reagent (Mixture of Iodine +Sulphur-dioxide+pyridine and

Methanol)

CHEMECALS USED :
1. METHANOL
2. CHLOROFORM/TOLUENE
3. DI-SODIUM TARTARATE
4. Distild Water

SOLVENT: Chloroform /TOLUNE + Methanol (3:1) Ratio

STEPS:

1. Calculate the strength of the reagent (i.e. Karl Fisher Reagent).

2. Determination of moisture content in the given sample (i.e. used oil).

METHOD:

1. Calculate the strength of the reagent (i.e. Karl Fisher Reagent) with DST:

► In this the Karl Fisher Reagent is standardized using di-sodium titrate (salt).
Take 0.1 gram of Di-sodium titrate in 50 mil methanol and titrate with the reagent
(i.e. Karl Fisher Reagent).This is to find out the exact strength of Karl fisher
Reagent.

Formula to calculate the strength of Karl Fisher Reagent

KFR Strength = C00xC01/ EP1

C00= DST weight in grams (0.1g)
EP1 = KFR consumed in ml
C01 = 156.6

Calculate the strength of the reagent (i.e. Karl Fisher Reagent) with Distilled water :
Take 10 micro liters of distilled water, add it in the solvent titrate against the reagent (i.e.
Karl Fisher Reagent).This is to find out the exact strength of Karl fisher Reagent.

2. Determination Moisture Content in the given sample (i.e. used oil)

► Take 2 grams of oil sample in 180 ml of solvent (Methanol + Toluene) mixer.
► The mixer (Solvent + Oil sample) is titrated with KFR.
► When excess of iodine exists, electric current can pass between two platinum
electrodes.

► The water in the sample reacts with iodine.
► When the water is no longer free to react with iodine, an excess of iodine
depolarizes the
Electrodes, signaling the end of the test.

Formula to calculate the Moisture :

% of Moisture = EP1xC30xC01xC02/C00
C01 = 0.1
C02 = 1
C30 = KFR Strength mg/ml
EP1 = KFR Consumed in ml
C00 = Sample weight in grams.
Procedure:
Switch on the instrument, keep selector on K/F and select the program.
Then prepare solvent mixer in the given solvent bottle (METHANOL + TOLUENE (or)
CHLOROFORM (1:2).( 60ml METHANOL+120ml TOLUENE)
Take 180 ml of solvent in the beaker, switch on the stirrer and fallow the instructions of
instruments to complete the blank titration.
After completion of blank titration click factor key and fallow the instructions of
instruments to calculate the strength of the reagent (KARL FISHER) with 10 micro
liters of distilled water.
After calculation of reagent strength instrument is ready for measuring the moisture
content for given oil samples. Select the file “1” OIL and fallow the instructions of
instruments to calculate the moisture content, Take 2 g of sample and mix it in the above
taken solvent to measure the moisture content.
