In this quarter, you will learn about South Asia, West Asia, and Central Asia and their
artworks and distinguish its similarities and differences with the arts of the other regions in
Asia.
South Asia being one of the large regions of the world features a shared cultural
foundation, the Indian culture. (In historical discussion, “India” often denotes all of South
Asia, not just the region of modern India.)
West Asia is rich in cultural heritage, their aesthetics can be seen in almost any
product from the region even including such things as handmade soap from Syria or
Lebanon.
Central Asian Arts terary, performing, and visual arts of a large portion of Asia
embracing the Turkic republics.
Ancient art refers to the many types of art produced by the
advanced cultures of ancient societies with some form of writing, such as those of
ancient China, India, Mesopotamia, Persia, Palestine, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. The art of
pre-literate societies is normally referred to as Prehistoric art and is not covered here
Although some Pre-Columbian cultures developed writing during the centuries before the
arrival of Europeans, on grounds of dating these are covered at Pre-Columbian art, and
articles such as Maya art and Aztec art.
ARTS OF SOUTH ASIA, WEST ASIA, AND CENTRAL ASIA
The Ajanta Caves of Maharashta, India are 30 rock-cut cave monuments that date
back from the 2nd century BCE to the 600 CE, including paintings and sculptures
considered to be masterpieces of Buddhist religious art, as well as frescos that are
reminiscent of the Sigiriya paintings in Sri Lanka.
CLASSICAL PERIOD
The image of Shiva, the destroyer, develops into Shiva the
Cosmic- dancer represented by a four armed figure. In this figure,
one hand holds the fire with which he destroys, another holds a
drum, which is the first sound heard in the world during creation,
then the third arm point up in a reassuring gesture, and a fourth

arm points down to the dwarf in which he dances to.

Rangoli – one of the most beautiful and most pleasing art forms
of India. It comes from the words “rang” meaning color and “aavalli” meaning colored
creepers” or “row of colors”. Rangoli is the art of making designs or patterns on the walls
or the floor of the house using finely ground white powder along with different colors.
