PROGRAMME NOTES
Frühlingstraum…………………………………….…………………………… Franz
Schubert
(from Winterreise) (1797-1828)
When the man rests during his journey, he dreams of springtime and love but wakes to
cold and darkness and the shrieking of ravens. He sees frost leaves painted on the window. Then
he wonders when they will turn green and when he can embrace his beloved again.
Lydia…………………………………………………………………………….…Gabriel Fauré
(1845-1924)
Gabriel Fauré was a French composer whose music influenced the course of modern
French music. He excelled as a songwriter with excellent refinement and sensitivity. Daring
harmonic progressions and sudden modulations are common in his music. He wrote more than
100 songs, including "Après un rêve" (c. 1865) and "Les Roses d'Ispahan" (1884),
and song cycles that included La Bonne Chanson (1891–92) and L'Horizon chimérique (1922).
Lydia is a song of admiration to a beautiful lady named Lydia. The song describes
Lydia's perfection from head to toe. The music flows in a melodic contour which emphasizes the
feeling of fascination and intimacy.
Danse Macabre……………………………………………………………..Camille Saint-Saëns
(1835-1921)
Camille Saint-Saëns was a French composer who is famous for his symphonic poems.
Saint-Saëns was notable for his pioneering efforts on behalf of French music, and he was a gifted
pianist, organist, and writer of criticism, poetry, essays, and plays. He adapted the virtuosity of
Franz Liszt's style into his symphonies and concerti. His Symphony No.3 (Organ) is most often
performed.
Danse macabre, Op. 40 by Camille Saint-Saëns is an art song for voice and piano (first
performed in 1872) with a French text by the poet Henri Cazalis based on an old French
superstition. Two years later, the composer expanded and reworked the piece into a tone poem
for orchestra, replacing the vocal line with a solo violin.
Adela…………………………………………………………….………………Joaquin Rodrigo
(1901-1999)
Joaquin Rodrigo was one of the leading Spanish composers of the 20 th century. Although
blind from age three, Rodrigo began music studies early and later became a pupil of Paul Dukas.
After the first performance of his highly successful Concierto de Aranjuez for guitar and
orchestra (1940) in Barcelona, he was widely regarded as the leading post-Civil War Spanish
composer. He later became a musical adviser for Spain's national radio and, from 1947 to 1977,
held the Manuel de Falla Chair of Music at the Complutense University of Madrid.
Adela is a song about a miserable, beautiful girl whose lover has an affair with her friend.
As time passes by, her body becomes weaker, and she knew that she would eventually die. The
song is in C# minor key, which shows the girl's misery clearly.
El Vito………………………………………………………………….……Fernando Obradors
(1897-1945)
Fernando Obradors was a Spanish composer. Between 1921 and 1941, he wrote four
volumes of an arrangement of classic Spanish poetry. One of the poems, "La casada infiel", was
written by his friend Federico García Lorca. Although he wrote many works for the theatre, none
have held their place in the repertoire. His orchestral work "El Poema de la Jungla" is inspired
by The Jungle Book stories by Rudyard Kipling.
El Vito is a traditional folk song and dance music of Andalusia whose origins can be
traced back to the 16th century. Its name refers to Saint Vitus, patron of dancers. It was created in
the nineteenth century as a dancing song typical of the bolero.
Stars is the 19th song in Act I of the musical Les Misérables. It takes place after Javert
unwittingly saves Valjean and Cosette from Thénardier and his gang's attempt to rob both of
them, and subsequently discovers that Valjean, his old-time rival, has surfaced once again but
has slipped through his grasp. He vows to complete his manhunt.
