PROGRAMME NOTES

Gott, sei mir gnädig………………………………………………………….Felix Mendelssohn

(from Paulus) (1809-1847)
Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer, pianist, musical conductor, and teacher. In
his `music, Mendelssohn largely observed Classical composers and practices while initiating
characteristics of Romanticism. Among his famous works are Overture to A Midsummer Night's
Dream, Italian Symphony, a violin concerto, two piano concerti, and several chamber music
pieces.
Paulus is an oratorio by Felix Mendelssohn. In 1832, Mendelssohn and pastor Julius
Schubring pulled together passages from the New Testament, mainly the Acts of the Apostles,
for the libretto of Paulus. The composition of the music started in 1834 and was complete in
1836. This oratorio was written for soprano, alto, tenor, two basses, mixed choir, and an
orchestra. Gott, sei mir gnädig is Saul asking for Lord's mercy upon him for he has persecuted
Him.

Gute Nacht……………………………………………………………………….Franz Schubert

(from Winterreise) (1797-1828)
Franz Peter Schubert was an Austrian composer who bridged the worlds of Classical and
Romantic music. He is famous for the melody and harmony in his songs and chamber music. He
created symphonies, masses, and piano works. His most notable works included Erlkönig,
written in 1815 and based on a poem by Goethe; Ave Maria!, written in 1825; and the Symphony
No. 9 in C Major, begun in 1825.
Winterreise is a cycle of 24 songs for male voice and piano composed in 1827 by Franz
Schubert, with words by German poet Wilhelm Müller. Winterreise tells a story about a grief-
stricken man who wanders around from town to town in winter to find a place where he belongs.
In this song, Gute Nacht, the man loses his beloved woman. He must leave and find his way in
the trackless snow.

Frühlingstraum…………………………………….…………………………… Franz
Schubert
(from Winterreise) (1797-1828)
When the man rests during his journey, he dreams of springtime and love but wakes to
cold and darkness and the shrieking of ravens. He sees frost leaves painted on the window. Then
he wonders when they will turn green and when he can embrace his beloved again.

Der Leiermann………………………………………………………………….. Franz

Schubert
(from Winterreise) (1797-1828)
Back in the village, the man sees a strange old man playing his hurdy-gurdy. His begging
bowl is always empty, no one listens to him, and the dogs growl at him. But his playing never
stops. The man wonders if he should come with the strange old man and ask him to accompany
his songs.

Lydia…………………………………………………………………………….…Gabriel Fauré
(1845-1924)
Gabriel Fauré was a French composer whose music influenced the course of modern
French music. He excelled as a songwriter with excellent refinement and sensitivity. Daring
harmonic progressions and sudden modulations are common in his music. He wrote more than
100 songs, including "Après un rêve" (c. 1865) and "Les Roses d'Ispahan" (1884),
and song cycles that included La Bonne Chanson (1891–92) and L'Horizon chimérique (1922).
Lydia is a song of admiration to a beautiful lady named Lydia. The song describes
Lydia's perfection from head to toe. The music flows in a melodic contour which emphasizes the
feeling of fascination and intimacy.

Danse Macabre……………………………………………………………..Camille Saint-Saëns
(1835-1921)
Camille Saint-Saëns was a French composer who is famous for his symphonic poems.
Saint-Saëns was notable for his pioneering efforts on behalf of French music, and he was a gifted
pianist, organist, and writer of criticism, poetry, essays, and plays. He adapted the virtuosity of
Franz Liszt's style into his symphonies and concerti. His Symphony No.3 (Organ) is most often
performed.

Danse macabre, Op. 40 by Camille Saint-Saëns is an art song for voice and piano (first
performed in 1872) with a French text by the poet Henri Cazalis based on an old French
superstition. Two years later, the composer expanded and reworked the piece into a tone poem
for orchestra, replacing the vocal line with a solo violin.

Let Us Garlands Bring…………………………………………..………………….Gerald Finzi

(1901-1956)
Gerald Finzi was a British composer. Finzi is best known as a choral composer but also
wrote in other genres. Large-scale compositions by Finzi include the cantata Dies Natalis for
solo voice and string orchestra, and his concertos for cello and clarinet.
Let Us Garlands Bring is a song cycle for baritone and piano composed by Gerald Finzi
between 1929 and 1942, and published as his Op. 18. It consists of five settings of songs from
plays by William Shakespeare. The five songs are "Come Away, Come Away, Death"; "Who Is
Silvia?"; "Fear No More the Heat o' the Sun"; "O Mistress Mine,"; and "It Was a Lover and His
Lass." The day of its premiere was the 70th birthday of Ralph Vaughan Williams, and the cycle
was dedicated to him.

Adela…………………………………………………………….………………Joaquin Rodrigo
(1901-1999)
Joaquin Rodrigo was one of the leading Spanish composers of the 20 th century. Although
blind from age three, Rodrigo began music studies early and later became a pupil of Paul Dukas.
After the first performance of his highly successful Concierto de Aranjuez for guitar and
orchestra (1940) in Barcelona, he was widely regarded as the leading post-Civil War Spanish
composer. He later became a musical adviser for Spain's national radio and, from 1947 to 1977,
held the Manuel de Falla Chair of Music at the Complutense University of Madrid.
Adela is a song about a miserable, beautiful girl whose lover has an affair with her friend.
As time passes by, her body becomes weaker, and she knew that she would eventually die. The
song is in C# minor key, which shows the girl's misery clearly.

El Vito………………………………………………………………….……Fernando Obradors
(1897-1945)
Fernando Obradors was a Spanish composer. Between 1921 and 1941, he wrote four
volumes of an arrangement of classic Spanish poetry.  One of the poems, "La casada infiel", was
written by his friend Federico García Lorca. Although he wrote many works for the theatre, none
have held their place in the repertoire. His orchestral work "El Poema de la Jungla" is inspired
by The Jungle Book stories by Rudyard Kipling.
El Vito is a traditional folk song and dance music of Andalusia whose origins can be
traced back to the 16th century. Its name refers to Saint Vitus, patron of dancers. It was created in
the nineteenth century as a dancing song typical of the bolero.

Stars…………………………………………………………………. Claude-Michel Schönberg

(from Les  Misérables) (1944-present)
Claude-Michel Schönberg is a French record producer, actor, singer, songwriter, and
musical theatre composer. His major works include La Révolution Française (1973), Les
Misérables (1980), Miss Saigon (1989), Martin Guerre (1996), The Pirate Queen (2006), and
Marguerite (2008).

Stars is the 19th song in Act I of the musical Les Misérables. It takes place after Javert
unwittingly saves Valjean and Cosette from Thénardier and his gang's attempt to rob both of
them, and subsequently discovers that Valjean, his old-time rival, has surfaced once again but
has slipped through his grasp. He vows to complete his manhunt.

Come paride vezzoso………………………………………………………….Gaetano Donizetti

(from L’elisir d’amore) (1797-1848)
Gaetano Donizetti was an Italian opera composer whose numerous operas in Italian and
French represent a transitional stage in operatic development between Rossini and Verdi. Among
his major works are Lucia di Lammermoor (1835), La fille du regiment (1840), and La
favorite (1840).
L'elisir d'amore is an opera buffa in two acts by Gaetano Donizetti. The libretto was
written by Felice Romani. The story revolves around the love story of Nemorino and Adina.
Nemorino desperately hopes that Adina will love him back. He buys an elixir of love from Dr.
Dulcamara to entice Adina. However, he never succeeds since the elixir is only a bottle of
Bordeaux. Adina agrees to marry a sergeant named Belcore, but she changes her mind on the day
of the marriage.
On the other hand, Nemorino joins the army to get money to buy another elixir. He
suddenly finds himself besieged by a group of women. Not because of the elixir, but because of
the fortunes that he inherits from his uncle, who died. Nemorino knows now that Adina cares for
him when she sheds tears seeing him with other women. In the end, Adina confesses to
Nemorino that she loves him.
Come paride vezzoso is a first act aria from L'elisir d'amore. This aria is sung by
Sergeant Belcore that appears with his regiment and immediately sets to court Adina.

Susanna or via sortite…………………………………………...…Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

(from Le Nozze di Figaro) (1756-1791)
Susanna or via sortite is a trio sung by the Count, the Countess, and Susanna. While the
Countess and Cherubino are waiting for Susanna to come back, they suddenly hear the Count
arriving. The Count demands to be allowed into the room, and the Countess reluctantly unlocks
the door. The Count enters and hears a noise from the closet. He tries to open it, but it is locked.
The Countess tells him it is only Susanna, trying on her wedding dress. At this moment, Susanna
re-enters unobserved, quickly realizes what is going on, and hides behind a couch. The Count
shouts for her to identify herself by her voice, but the Countess orders her to be silent.
