Systems Modules Course Policy

This policy applies to all courses in the Systems Modules: Hematology & Introduction to
Pathology (HIP), Cardiovascular System (CV), Renal System (RENAL), Pulmonary System (PULM),
Gastrointestinal System (GI), Nervous System & Behavior (NSB), Endocrine System (ENDO),
Reproductive Systems (REPRO), and Musculoskeletal System and Dermatology (MSK/DERM).

ATTENDANCE POLICY
Attendance is expected at all scheduled McGovern Medical School educational sessions.
Attendance is required at any session marked on the official One45 schedule as follows:
Small Group, Team-Based Learning (TBL), Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Skills Session
(including SIM), Preceptorship, Laboratory, OSCE (clinical assessment sessions). Any
session at which a patient is present will be required. With the approval of the
curriculum committee, Module Directors may require attendance at any session in order
to meet module objectives.
Procedures for tracking student attendance at required sessions and consequences for
missing required sessions will be listed in course/module materials.
(passed by Curriculum Committee, July 18, 2018)
The Office of Admissions and Student Affairs (OASA) manages the sessions labeled
OASA/Wellness/McGovern. Students are responsible for complying with OASA instructions for
attendance.
Absences from required sessions may be excused by OASA. The Module Director(s) will
determine the consequences of excused and unexcused absences. Detailed information will be
posted on the Canvas page of the required session. If a consequence of an unexcused absence
results in points off the final grade, the absence will be recorded in the Canvas Gradebook and
summarized in one45 with the label “Penalty”.
Compliance with attendance policies is one way to demonstrate professionalism. Attendance
records may be used in the broad assessment of students who are under review by the Student
Evaluation and Promotion Committee (SEPC).

Assessments
Both formative and summative assessments are administered during this module.
Formative Assessment
The purpose of formative assessments is to provide an opportunity for students to measure
their progress and create a personal strategy for studying. Formative assessment data is
reviewed each week by the Module Director and Teaching Faculty and used to guide future
instruction and review.
A weekly Formative Assessment quiz will be available through Firecracker on Fridays at 1:00
PM. Students have a firm deadline of Monday at 12:00 pm to complete the assessment.

Students who score 40% or higher on a formative exam will receive credit towards the total
number of bonus points awarded. There will be a maximum number of three (3) bonus points
available. Each formative assessment completed on time with a minimum score of 40% is worth
a fraction of those three (3) bonus points. Bonus Points earned will be posted and summarized
in one45 with the label Bonus Score.
Students who experience technical difficulties during the formative assessment window must
notify the Course Coordinator and Firecracker before the upload deadline in order to receive
consideration for credit.

Summative Assessment
Faculty members choose the questions from the NBME question bank based on lecture content
and PBL objectives for the block exams. If necessary, faculty may add module questions to the
Doctoring exam in Examsoft. NSB Lab Practical Exams are delivered through ExamSoft over
content covered in the lab.
Students will be notified in the course materials (Canvas) as to which sessions will be assessed
on the Doctoring exam.

Remediation
Grades of BP or F must be remediated at a time specified by the SEPC. The specific plan for
remediation will be communicated after the SEPC decides who is eligible to remediate. Success
or failure will be recorded on the transcript as P or F in a separate course. Therefore, the
original grade will remain on the transcript.
NOTE: bonus points awarded for formative exam completion will not be added to the
remediation score. The remediation exam will be similar in format and cover the same content
as the original course/module exam.

Course Grade Notification Process

After each course/module is complete:

1. Within two weeks of the final exam, adjusted for holidays when necessary, the
course/module grade will be posted to one45.
2. Within one week of the evaluation due date, students who receive a grade of
Incomplete will be notified by email from the Office of Educational Programs. (See
Curriculum Evaluation Policy below).

3. Within one week of grade posting, students who receive a grade of BP or F will be
notified by email from the Office of Educational Programs. It is the student’s
responsibility to then contact the Office of Admissions and Student Affairs to discuss the
possibility of remediation.
4. Within four weeks of the final exam, grades will be recorded with the Registrar’s Office
through MyUTH. At this point, any subsequent adjustments will require submission of a
grade change form.

CURRICULUM EVALUATION POLICY

Students are assigned course/module/block and faculty evaluations. Failure to
complete all evaluations as assigned will result in an official final grade of Incomplete (I)
in the course. A grade of Incomplete (I) due to failure to complete assigned evaluations
may be resolved by completion of the outstanding items.
(passed by Curriculum Committee, April 18, 2018)
Evaluations are assigned to students in one45 and appear on the to-do list. All evaluations are
anonymous. We can identify who has submitted an evaluation, but we cannot associate names
with responses.
All evaluations for systems module are due on the Friday of the first week of classes after the
final examination for the module, adjusted for holidays as necessary. . Failure to submit any of
the assigned evaluations on time (even just one) will result in a grade of Incomplete. The
Incomplete will be noted in one45 as “Incomplete grade on transcript for late/outstanding
evaluations.”
A calculated module grade will be posted to myUTH once any outstanding evaluations have
been submitted. PLEASE NOTE: A grade of Incomplete due to failure to complete assigned
evaluations per this policy will remain permanently on the transcript.
You will receive 2 types of evaluations. One type evaluates faculty who participated in the
module. You will know who to evaluate at the beginning of the module so that you will pay
attention to those sessions. The second type evaluates module content. These evaluations will
appear in one45 at the start of the week of the summative exam.
Evaluation information is reviewed and taken into careful consideration by module directors
and faculty. Timely feedback from students gives faculty sufficient information to make
judgments about the strengths and weaknesses of the curriculum without overburdening
students. In order for the continual improvement process to work, students must complete the
evaluations.
