Job Purpose: Assist with the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of
nursing care to achieve the best outcomes for patients
Work as a member of the multi -disciplinary team under the direction
and delegation of a registered nurse or midwife, as required by
legislation.

QUALIFICATIONS, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

QUALIFICATIONS

 Registration with Nursing Council of New Zealand; inclusive of scope of practice.


 A current practising certificate with the Nursing Council of New Zealand.
 Expected to meet competent level of practice on the Professional Development and
Recognition Programme, but may achieve a higher level of practice.
 Experience in settings relevant for the position.

TRAINING

 Expected to undertake SPEC (Safe Practice Effective Communication) training and achieve full
competency; regular refresher courses are also required in order to maintain full competency.

SKILLS

Scope of practice Nursing Council of New Zealand


Enrolled Nurses practise under the direction and delegation of a registered nurse or nurse practitioner
to deliver nursing care and health education across the life span to health consumers in community,
residential or hospital settings. Enrolled nurses contribute to nursing assessments, care planning,
implementation and evaluation of care for health consumers and or families/ whanau. The registered
nurse maintains overall responsibility for the plan of care. Enrolled nurses assist health consumers
with the activities of daily living, observe changes in health consumer’s conditions and report these to
the registered nurse, administer medicines and undertake other nursing care responsibilities
appropriate to their assessed competence.

In acute settings, enrolled nurses must work in a team with a registered nurse who is responsible for
directing and delegating nursing interventions. In some teams enrolled nurses may co-ordinate a
team of health care assistants under the direction and delegation of a registered nurse. In some
settings enrolled nurses may work under the direction and delegation of a registered health
practitioner*. In these situations the enrolled nurse must have registered nurse supervision and must
not assume overall responsibility for nursing assessment or care planning. Enrolled nurses are
accountable for their nursing actions and practise competently in accordance with legislation, to their
level of knowledge and experience. They work in partnership with health consumers, families/ whanau
and multidisciplinary teams.
*A person who is registered under the Act e.g. Midwife, medical practitioner, occupational therapist.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND WORK FUNCTION / ACTIVITY

Work environment
 Works indoors within hospital wards, departments, health clinics, community settings and their
offices.
 Employees work in adequately lit, heated, ventilated and clean, well maintained and hygienic
workspaces.

Work function/activity
 Medium to heavy physical demand.
 Sits occasionally. Stands and walks frequently to monitor and examine patients, gather and use
equipment.
 Lifting within light to heavy demand may be required when lifting or moving patients.
 Occasional bending, squatting, crouching, stretching, twisting and reaching may be required when
carrying out nursing procedures.
 There is frequent contact with body fluid and materials which will require the use of protective
clothing and gloves to be used and safety procedures adhered to.
 Occasional repetitive hand and finger movements will be required when using a computer and
writing. There is frequent use of surgical and medical equipment and materials including medicines,
medical instruments, blood pressure and temperature taking equipment, medical dressings and
sterilising equipment.
 Mental skills necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with nursing, observation,
evaluation and assessment of baby and maternal health, communication, interpersonal,

 Those working in acute inpatient services work with clients who present as unwell, and who can be,
at times, violent and aggressive. Training in Safe Practice Effective Communication (SPEC) is
provided and staff working in areas requiring SPEC are expected to obtain and maintain full
competency.

 New Zealand full driver’s license (essential for some Enrolled Nurse positions)
