1 The Flag Incident that occurred at Hotel Majapahit on September 1945 was a very
historic day for Surabaya youths.

Title The Resistance of Prince Diponegoro


Orientation This war began in 1825, when Prince Diponegoro launched an attack
on the Yogyakarta and Dutch sultanates. At that time Java was
controlled by the Dutch and oppressed by Dutch policies which
greatly harmed the people and the aristocrats.

Events The war was fierce, at first Prince Diponegoro gained success in this
war, because of the support of the people who opposed the Dutch.
But, slowly the Dutch managed to turn things around. The Dutch
pressed Prince Diponegoro's troops with a fort system.

At that time, outbreaks of cholera and dysentery broke out in


conditions of war and killed many people. The diesase and Dutch
strategy weakened Prince Diponegoro Then, one by one the
supporters of Prince Diponegoro were caught and began to
surrender.Because of his urgency, Prince Diponegoro agreed to
negotiate with the Dutch in 1830, but Prince Diponegoro was
betrayed and taken prisoner, then exiled to the island of Sulawesi.

Re-orientation This war were very tragic, in the attempt to seize the territory it cost
a lot of lives but in the end the Dutch still didn’t want to be invited
to negotiate and instead betrayed Prince Diponegoro.
