BOXING TERMINOLOGIES

Punches:
 Jab
 Quick punch with the leading hand, straight from the chin to the target.
 Hooks
 Short sideways inside punch delivered with the elbow bent. When thrown, the arm looks like a
hook in shape.
 Uppercuts
 An upwards-thrown punch designed to hit an opponent's chin; usually part of a multi-punch
combination and best used when a boxer is very close to his opponent.
 Crosses
 It is a punch usually thrown with the dominant hand the instant an opponent leads with his opposite
hand. The blow crosses over the leading arm, hence its name.
 Counterpunch
 A counter-attack begun immediately after an opponent throws a punch, exploiting the opening in
the opponent's position.

Stance:
 Stance
 refers to whether a boxer is right-handed or left-handed.
 It is how you position your feet and body.
 Orthodox Stance
 For boxers that are right handed. You have to stand with your left foot and left hand in front of you.
 Southpaw Stance
 For left-handed boxers. Keep your right foot and right hand forward.

Organizations:
 National Boxing Association/World Boxing Association
 Formed in 1921 in Rhode Island, USA, the National Boxing Association (NBA) became the World
Boxing Association (WBA) in 1962. (It is not to be confused with the current National Boxing
Association, an unconnected body.)
 The World Boxing Association (WBA) is the oldest still active world sanctioning body, having its
origins in the National Boxing Association.

 World Boxing Council


 The World Boxing Council was initially established by 11 countries: Argentina, Brazil,
Chile, France, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, the United
States, and Venezuela. They met in Mexico City on February 14, 1963, upon the invitation
of the President of Mexico, Adolfo López Mateos, to form an international boxing
organization that would achieve the unity of all commissions of the world to control the
expansion of boxing.

 International Boxing Federation


 The International Boxing Federation was created in 1983. President: Daryl J. Peoples
  In April of 1983, the members of the USBA voted to expand the organization and create an
international division. The new organization was called the International Boxing Federation, and
Bob Lee was named the president.
 The IBF is one of four major sanctioning bodies recognized by the International Boxing Hall of
Fame, along with the WBA, WBC, and WBO.
 In August of 2000, IBF president Bob Lee was acquitted of charges that he took bribes from
promoters and managers to manipulate boxers' rankings, but he was found guilty of tax evasion,
money laundering and interstate travel in aid of racketeering. He was sentenced to 22 months in
prison and fined $25,000.
 National Boxing Association II
 This NBA is to be distinguished from the original National Boxing Association, which is now known
as the World Boxing Association.
 The National Boxing Association was reestablished in May of 1984 in New York City.

 Chief Second
 The person in command of a boxer's corner during a bout.
 Cut man
 The person who deals with cuts sustained by the boxer
 Clinching
 To hold an opponent's body with one or both arms to prevent or hinder punches.
 Bout
 A boxing contest; boxing fight; boxing match.
 Majority Draw
 occurs when the scorecard of one of the three scoring officials favors one fighter, while the other
two judges' scorecards have the bout scored even. It is officially recorded as a generic "draw" on
each boxer's fight record. 
 Majority Decision
 occurs when two of the three judging officials decide in favor of one boxer, while the third official
calls the bout a draw.  A majority decision officially is recorded as a win in a boxer's fight record.
