Sports writing is a form of news

more than a news writer. It has the
privilege to use colorful words with

Singapore's Joseph Schooling defeated decorated US Olympian Michael Phelps in

the 100m butterfly swimming race and won his country's first-ever Olympic gold
medal.

The 21-year-old Singaporean won in an Olympic record time of 50.39 seconds.

Phelps came in second, earning a silver on 51.14 seconds - tied with South Africa's
Chad Le Clos and Hungary's Laszlo Cseh.

"I'm just ecstatic. I need it to sink in," Schooling told reporters after his historic swim.

"It feels great - kind of feels surreal right now, it's crazy," he said.

"I really can't describe how this moment feels. All the adrenaline is running through
my veins right now. It's a dream come true."

Dos and Don’ts in Sports Writing
If in doubt, stick to simple words

The search for emphatic and strong words should not

be done to sacrifice simple but appropriate words such
as ―win‖ and ―defeat‖.

Ex. Using three consecutive punches, Nonito Donaire,

a slender man from the Philippines ravaged the
defenseless Jorge Arce, a fiery fellow from Mexico via
knockout victory held at Houston, Texas on December
15.

Banking on heavy punches and tricky strategy,

Donaire knocked down Arce three times in three
rounds of action on their tight match.‖

One word has changed the whole British team – belief.
We believe we can win, we believe we can get world records. If you
have belief, you can build everything around that and we showed
that here.
