Philip Page
Class: 2007
Concentration:
Broadcast production
Current position:
JOMC Professor
Location: NCAT
When asked if he believed that his concentration impacted society a little more than the
rest, Page said “It depends on how you look at it, I do believe it impacts society. You have to be
able to create visual content, and know how to engage people as a mass.” Page did not forget to
mention social media. “In just using social media, it just reaches and affects a lot of people.”
When asked if he believed that the concentration that he chose was right for him, Page noted “Oh
yeah, always. I never doubted that. [I knew] after graduation, before graduation. Usually 9
times out of 10 if I commit myself to something it’s what I want to do. I 100% know what I am
doing and I knew that I was going to be a broadcast production major.
Journalism and Mass communication professionals tend to use their knowledge of
strategic media practices as well as rhetorical principles to share, develop and evaluate effective
messages to large, targeted audiences. These strategies allow public relations specialists,
journalists, broadcast professionals, marketers and advertisers, content writers, graphic designers
and illustrators, corporate media managers, as well as other media professionals to create, craft
and launch calculated communication plans from broadcast news to online marketing campaigns
across nearly every industry.
A wonderful example would be how researchers might study the long lasting effects of
how news outlets report violent as well as tragic events, or even how advancements in
information technology and emerging media are reshaping interpersonal communication and
relationships. They might also explore the relationship between social media and political voting
patterns. What this all says is that as a concentration, Journalism and Mass communication
definitely has a huge impact on our society because its main focus is creating content that is able
to target the mass. This proves to be especially useful in situations where the public needs to
receive a stream of information.
