ABSTRACT:
This paper describes about Physiological properties, Physical properties and other
properties of the Contact lenses.

INTRODUCTION:
PHYSIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF THE CONTACT LENS:
Physiological Properties means Contact lens material must have good Oxygen
permeability. It means cornea must be exposed Oxygen properly after wearing

Contact lens.
Here permeability of the oxygen is denoted with Dk.
D= Diffusion
K= Co-
efficient
When contact lens thickness is considered, it is called oxygen Transmissibility. i.e.
Dk/t where t is thickness in mm.
If oxygen permeability is reduced, then problems like corneal edema, Microcytes
and deposits are created.
Here EOP or Equivalent Oxygen Percentage is a very important factor. EOP may
be either in Static condition or Dynamic condition. Dynamic EOP value is 2 to 3
higher as compared to static in both RGP and soft contact lenses. Lens thickness is
a considerable factor for EOP.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE CONTACT LENS:
The meaning of the Physical Properties is, it is the physical state of the Contact
lens material and it is measurable. This physical state must be healthiest to the
cornea or eye. For Physical properties, we have to look for
Wettability
Flexibility
WETTABILITY:
The meaning of the Wettability is that the Contact lens material must be wettable
within normal range. It can be measured in this manner. If tear film is placed on
the Contact lens surface and if creates Zero-degree angle then complete wettability
is occurred. If it creates low angle then it is somewhat wettable and if it creates
angle greater than 90 degree, then it is poor wettable. Wettability is a very
important features for the Contact Lens material. If it is sub normal from its own
range then Tear Film will not be spread properly on the contact lens after wear. It
can create foreign body sensation, deterioration of the Visual Acuity also.

FLEXIBILITY:
It means that during pressurization of the upper Eye lid or else, how much shape
is maintained by the Contact lens is seen. So, Flexibility must be within normal
range. Flexibility of RGP lens is less as compared to Soft contact lenses. In some
toricity of cornea, RGP maintain its shape but Soft Contact lenses is not able to
maintain its own shape. This is called Flexibility.
Flexibility is also be a very important features of the Contact lens. Soft contact
lens flexibility is high compare to RGP contact lens that’s why in case of corneal
disease Soft contact lens is provided. But during corneal Toricity of the cornea
RGP is provided due to this material is maintain its shape and provide good visual
acuity (because between Cornea and Contact lens, Tear film is filled up and
proved Spherical Surface).
OTHER PROPERTIES OF CONTACT LENS:
It means, below of these properties of the Contact lens material must be within
normal range for excellent ocular condition. These are:
Optical Quality
Biocompatibility
OPTICAL QUALITY:
It indicates that how much material is transparent. It means transparency of vision
is how much during Contact lens wear. Less light transmission loss indicates high
optical quality. Always it should be remembered that RGP Contact lens wearer
transmission of vision is more compared to Soft contact lenses.
BIOCOMPATIBILITY:
It indicates the Contact lens material is harmful or not harmful. After wearing the
contact lens any corneal or else reaction is created or not.
