o manifested appreciation in the PEC provisions in the installation of non-metallic conduit

Learner’s Tasks

Lesson Overview
This lesson is all about the PEC provisions on the installation of non-metallic conduit (PVC).
Polyvinyl chloride protection (PVC) is widely used electrical material specially in the installation of
wiring in damp locations and concealed areas.

PEC Provision on the Installation of non-metallic conduit (PVC)

3.58.1 General.
3.58.1.1 Scope. This article covers the use, installation, and construction specifications for
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and associated fittings.

3.58.1.2 Definition.
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC). An unthreaded thin wall raceway of circular cross section designed for
the physical protection and routing of conductors and cables and for use as an equipment grounding
conductor when installed utilizing appropriate fittings.

3.58.1.6 Listing Requirements. PVC, factory elbows, and associated fittings shall be listed.

3.58.2 Installation.
3.58.2.1 Uses Permitted.
A. Exposed and Concealed. The use of PVC shall be permitted for both exposed and
concealed work.
B. Corrosion Protection. PVC, elbows, couplings, and fittings shall be permitted to be
installed in concrete, in direct contact with the earth, or in areas subject to severe
corrosive influences where protected by corrosion protection and judged suitable for
the condition.
C. Wet Locations. All supports, bolts, straps, screws, and so forth shall be of corrosion-
resistant materials or protected against corrosion by corrosion-resistant materials.

3.58.2.3 Uses not permitted. PVC shall not be used under the following conditions:
1
1. Where, during installation or afterward, it will be subjected to severe physical damaged.
2. Where protected from corrosion solely by enamel
3. In cinder concrete or cinder fill where subject to permanent moisture unless protected
on all sides by a layer of noncinder concrete at least 50 mm thick or unless the tubing is
at least 450 mm under the fill.
4. In any hazardous (classified)location except as permitted by 5.2.2.1, 5.3.2.1, and 5.4.1.20

5. For the support of luminaires (fixtures) or other equipment except conduit bodies no
larger than the largest raceway size of the tubing.
