Austin James Stevens ~ the ‘Snakeman’ ~ was bora in South Africa. He became interested in snakes and reptiles when he was twelve. By the time he left school, his private reptile collection included some of the most exoticand poisonous reptiles in the world 2. Alter leaving school, Austin joined the army. The other soldiers called him the ‘Snakeman’ because he could track, identify and remove poisonous snakes better than anyone else 3 During his time inthe army, he had his frst snake bite He was bitten on the hand by a poisonous snake and was taken to hospital, t wasn't an easy journey. First, he ‘was driven 480 km along bad roads, then he had a 1,600 kn flight on an army plane. The plane landed in front of the hospital 4 After his ime in the army, Austin worked at the ‘Transvaal Snake Park, He was offered a job for three months but he actually stayed for six years. t was here that he learnt about reptiles and snakes and became an exper. At the Snake Park, he had to demonstrate the snakes to visitors to the Park. He loved doing this and his demonstrations were very popular. He was asked to take some of the snakes to a TV studio and appear on a TV show. the programme was a success and he was asked to do more. 5. After leaving the Transvaal Snake Park in 1981, Austin worked at the Hartebeespoort Dam Snake and Animal Park in Southern africa. Here, he learnt about other ‘animals and he became interested in film-making, Many ofthe park's animals were trained to perform in films. When he is not travelling the world, Austin now lives, in Namibia, a desert country on the south-west coast of Africa, His main work is wildlife photography and writing.
