Nadeeka Rathnayake Seminar 4

This article provides a summary to Gentile, M. (2010) Giving Voice to Values Chapter 9 and
appendix.
Albert O. Hirschman mentioned three potential factors that lead an organization to regress as
exit, voice, and loyalty. Hirschman's findings it is highly focused on the GVV and how to do
it more effectively. For that, it is important to share the experiences of one's own as well as
others. Further, seven basic factors turn disablers to enabelares namely Values; Choice;
Normality; Purpose; Self-Knowledge, Self-Image, and Alignment; Voice; and Reasons and
Rationalizations.
We are reluctant to GVV when the arguments are not perfect and complete always although it
is not mandatory to be perfect. However, we can always get external assistance to raise our
voice and GVV. Further, it needs to be investigated about the strengths and weaknesses of
each external tool and make arguments. It is quite normal that individual arguments can differ
according to the individuals’ perspectives and also it helps to articulate the values and
situations.
It is not a surprise that GVV and arguments were made by the individuals after they have
practiced the GVV approach.
Moreover, sometimes we have good power and morals to raise our voice when the values
link to our deeper concerns. Despite when people GVV it is effective to link the values to the
religion or the culture. However, people tend to generalize the conflicts when it applies to
themselves.
Most of the time we face value conflicts with the time pressure and are not clear that the way
to respond. Therefore, it is very important to be creative and respond to conflicts. According
to Teresa Amabile that extreme time pressure can hinder creative thinking. Nevertheless, she
also emphasizes that serious feelings of vital missions encourage the treatment of such
situations effectively. Jeff Salett found a solution to the time pressure of the firm with
integrity and using positional power to make changes. Sometimes people can take time to
respond to the value conflicts. Maybe at the first hand, it can make a response and it can be
changed after some time.
Courage also plays a very important role in value conflicts. Courage can define in different
contexts.
However, it is important to carefully consider the most appropriate approach in a particular
situation. Sometimes it is important to take external support as well as need to raise voice
collaboratively. The appendix helps to optimize the knowledge of GVV and helps us to be
prepared well.
