ABSTRACT

DISCRIMINATION

Introduction

Discrimination has been active even before people were born. It can happen to everyone.

It can also be any kind of form. This can decrease self-esteem and would also mentally affect a

person. Worst case scenario, it can led to death due to depression. Everyone should be sensitive

enough of the words they utter for one may forgive but one cannot easily forget. Hurtful words

leave scars.

The human brain naturally put things in category to make sense of the world. Very young

children quickly learn the difference between boys and girls. However, the values that people

place on different categories are learned from parents, peers, and the observations that are made

about how the world works. Oftentimes, discrimination stems from fear and misunderstanding.

According to American Psychological Association (2019), discrimination is the unfair or

prejudicial treatment of people and groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, age, or

sexual orientation. It is also a public health issue. Research has found that the experience of

discrimination—when perceived as such—can lead to a cascade of stress-related emotional,

physical, and behavioral changes. Stress evokes negative emotional responses, such as distress,

sadness, and anger, and can often lead to an increase in behaviors that harm health, such as

alcohol, tobacco, and other substance use, and a decrease in healthy activities, such as sleep and

physical activity.

Discrimination can be damaging even if you haven’t been the target of overt acts of bias.

Regardless of one’s personal experiences, it can be stressful for everyone even if it is not

experienced directly by one person (American Psychological Association, 2019).

Statement of the Problem (Research Questions)

1. Have you been a victim of discrimination?

2. Has your experience with discrimination altered how you view yourself?

3. Does discrimination harm you or interfere with your academic performance?

The researchers used surveys in collecting data from the Grade 10 students. Upon

analyzing the answers from the survey, the researchers have found that majority of the students

have experienced discrimination. However, despite of experiencing this, majority of the Grade

10 students do not let this discrimination affect the way they view themselves but they have also

admitted that even if they are not affected by this, this also have harmed them and interfered with

their academic performances.

In one study, both domestic and international studies find that experiences of

discrimination reported by adults are adversely related to mental health and indicators of

physical health, including preclinical indicators of disease, health behaviors, utilization of care,

and adherence to medical regimens. Emerging evidence also suggests that discrimination can

affect the health of children and adolescents and that at least some of its adverse effects may be

ameliorated by the presence of psychosocial resources (Williams, et.al., 2019)

There are only 3 questions on the survey for the convenience of the researchers. This is

also for the researchers to easily gather the data with no problem. Upon gathering the data, there

are no answers in the survey that were left unanswered.

Methods

Participants

The researchers polled 55 students from each of the section's 11 classes, and provided

those students with five survey papers in exchange for their voluntary participation.

The researchers used a Voluntary Response Sampling in choosing the participants of the

survey. Voluntary response sample is mainly based on ease of access. Instead of the researcher

choosing participants and directly contacting them, people volunteer themselves (McCombes,

2019).

Research Design

For this research, the researchers followed a descriptive approach plan, which combines a

trustworthy method for conducting this study with surveys used to gather information from the

targeted respondents, who are the Grade 10 students.

Materials

Survey is a method of collecting specific data from a group of people. The researchers

used this as the means of gathering data about the effects of discrimination from the targeted

respondents who are the Grade 10 students.

Procedure

In completing this study, the researchers did the following (in order):

1. The researchers did some brainstorming of topics and pick the final topic which is “The

effects of discrimination”.

2. Respondents were chosen using Voluntary Response Sampling targeted at Grade 10 students.

3. The researchers have started making the introduction.

4. The researcher started gathering information by making a survey.

4. Survey questions were made and then distributed to the targeted respondents.

5. The researchers analyzed the data from the survey and interpreted it.

6. The researchers made the conclusion of the study.

7. References were gathered and that concludes the end of the study.

Location of the Study

The locations that the researchers have went to do this research study was in:
