Proposed Title: THE INFLUENCE OF PEER PRESSURE ON THE USE OF

ALCOHOL BEVERAGES

Research Title (as may be directed by the panel)

From Schoolgoers to Partygoers: The Influence of Peer Pressure on the Use
of Alcoholic Beverage among Students
Background of the Study: (flow of ideas from macro to micro; include
justification to conduct the study/ analysis of local situation; in bulleted form)

 Alcohol is the most commonly abused drug by American teenager. The

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) publishes
that 60% of adolescents admit to having at least one alcoholic drink by
the time they turn 18.

 The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 11% of
all alcohol consumed in America is by those between the ages 12 and 20.

 Underage alcohol abuse is considered to be a major public health

concern within the United states, contributing to injuries, accidents,
crimes, poor school performance and even death.

 Kypri (2005) indicated that hazardous drinking activity has increased

among American students.

 Approximately 15% of university students develop alcohol-dependent

behavior opposed to 12% who are non-students.

 White and Swartzwelder (2009) study revealed that binge drinking,

blackouts, vomiting and hangover occurred prior to the beginning of first
year in the university.

 Peer pressure have a significant impact on teenage alcohol consumption.

 A young person’s social identity is often molded by their social groups

and by their desire to fit in and be part of the “crowd”.
