What I Have Learned

From the lesson on the types of speeches, I learned that:

1. I will use the following types of speech according to purpose when:

A. Informative

when I am trying to inform or educate the listeners or audience by giving information or new
relevant information of a particular topic. Also, when making a complex topic a lot easier to
understand by using illustrations, demonstrations about an important topic.

B. Persuasive
when my goal is to persuade or convince the listeners to believe or convince on what I am
trying to say or my point of view or perceptions in a specific topic.

C. Entertainment

when I am to entertain people, I’m making sure that their mood will lighten up and make
them laugh, relax, smile with my humorous gestures, words or jokes considering that it is
appropriate before sharing some jokes with them.

2. The three (3) types of speech according to purpose are also used in:

Other Speaking Situation

Informative- When you are sharing information with your friends. For instance, there’s a detected

incoming typhoon and you are sharing details to your friends about it by telling
them that based on what you’ve read it is stronger typhoon than usual. With this,
you can help them to be ready.

B. When you are persuading your parents to allow you to go out even if there’s still a
Persuasive- virus COVID 19. You are persuading them in a way that you’re telling them that
you’ll follow all the regulations and will be careful when you are outside.

C. Entertainment- When you want the people around you to smile and laugh. Usually we are
entertaining our friends or family by saying silly jokes. Also, when meeting new
people, you are cracking jokes so the atmosphere will lighten.
3. I will use the following types of speech
according to delivery when:

A. Manuscript
I will be using a Manuscript when it doesn’t require to memorize your piece or speech
whereby I’ll have a copy of only the highlights or plot of my piece and convey my message
to the audience, and since it’s just reading a speech or script, it is important to make eye
contact in a way that will help the audience feel that you are talking to them, and will still
capture their attentions.

B. Memorized
I usually use a Memorized Speech when it is required. It is when I’ll be delivering my
speech from my memory. The advantage of this is that you’ll be able to connect to the
audience by maintaining eye-contact with them. However, the disadvantage of this is when
suddenly you forgot or unable to recall your speech or perform some mental action.

C. extemporaneous
I will use Extemporaneous Speech when I am given a short amount of time to prepare my
speech about a certain topic. In addition, it is sometimes called as “limited-preparation
speaking”

D. Impromptu
I will use Impromptu Speech when I am in a situation wherein I was asked a question on the
spot and I need to come up with an answer immediately. Usually, in this type of speech, I’ll
be using my stock knowledge. For instance, in recitations, suddenly you were called by your
teacher to answer a specific question.
4. The four (4) types of speech according to delivery are also observed
I think teachers are usually using manuscript when teaching students. Since they
Manuscript- in: they will teach in one day instead, they’re just
can’t memorize every lesson
outlining what will they’re going to teach students.
A.

B. Memorized- performance tasks like delivering speech because with this, I have only one clear
piece that I will deliver and it make my confidence boost since I’m prepared.

C. Extemporaneous- I usually encounter extemporaneous speech when there’s a recitation in our

school wherein the student and teacher will have a one-on-one session outside the
room. The teacher will ask the students different questions and the student will
only have 1-2 minutes to prepare.

D. Impromptu- In our school, it is a prerequisite having a research study and defending it to the
judges or panel. The researchers are encountering impromptu speech when the
panel are asking them about their study.

5. As a speaker, I should know my purpose and method of delivery

before giving my speech so…

I should know my purpose and method of delivery before giving my speech so I can adjust the
words and the way I convey my speech based on who are my audiences. Also, by knowing how
will I convey my insights and knowledge, whether it’s to inform, to persuade, to inspire, to
motivate or to entertain, it would be a lot easier to connect with my audience or listener/s and I
can clearly state what is the purpose of what am I trying to say. With this, it will avoid
unnecessary misinterpretations and misunderstandings.
What I Can Do

Now that you know how to distinguish the different types of speeches, try to make a
meaningful activity out of it by delivering a simple speech as a life coach. A life
coach is someone who helps people identify their goals and develop an actionable
plan to achieve them. To help the people who were affected by the recent COVID-19
pandemic, give a 2 or 3-minute persuasive memorized speech. Take a video of
yourself considering the rubric below.
