1. Is computer useful in statistics? Why or why not?

Computer has made such a big impact in any industry and it has opened so many
opportunities and made our lives much easy and accessible. Computers can help us to do
what we did before the advent of the computer but in a more efficient way. And computers can
help us to do things nobody thought of before the advent of the computer. The computers can be
used in numerical and graphical data analysis; symbolic computations; simulations; storing
statistical knowledge; presentation of results. The computers make the analysis of numerical data
easier and save much more time than doing manual computation. Computers also help the
statisticians as well as anybody with the accuracy of numerical and statistical data. In the field of
statistics education, technology is commonly thought of in terms of computers and the associated
statistical computing packages, which together have become every statistician's indispensable
working tool, as well as video and other tools used in the teaching of probability and statistics.
Technology, however, especially in developing countries, ranges from frequently used, low cost
materials to the less used, expensive, and sophisticated equipment. Through computers, it helped
a lot and it improve our ways to get and compute for numerical and statistical data that we need
on everyday living.

2. Are there applications of Statistics in business, computer science and academe?

Business
Statistics is useful, and it play a very important role in business. And it is especially
important for a businessman to know who and what are the wants and needs of his customers. A
successful businessman must be very quick and accurate in decision making. He knows that what
his customers wants, he should therefore, know what to produce and sell and in what quantities.
Statistics helps businessman to plan production according to the taste of the costumers, the
quality of the products can also be checked more efficiently by using statistical methods. All the
activities of the businessman based on statistical information. He can make correct decision about
the location of business, marketing of the products, financial resources etc. The use of Statistics is
indispensable in forecasting sales, market share and demand for various types of Industrial
products.
Factor analysis, conjoint analysis and multidimensional scaling are invaluable tools which are based on
statistical concepts, for designing of products and services based on customer response.

Computer Science

There are a number of ways the roles of statisticians and computer scientists merge;
consider the development of models and data mining. Typically, statistical approach to models
tends to involve stochastic (random) models with prior knowledge of the data. The computer
science approach, on the other hand, leans more to algorithmic models without prior knowledge
of the data. Ultimately, these come together in attempts to solve problems. Simulations (used to
gain a greater understanding of a variety of systems) are truly a marriage of computing capability
and statistics—the use of statistics within programming improves understanding of the underlying
system leading to more meaningful results. Statistics in software engineering leads to more
conclusive determinations of quality and optimal performance. Statistical modelling is especially
useful at two levels in computer science, for computer hardware and software quality control and
pricing.

First statistics help explains the differences between a lower and a higher level-bit computer and
what computations can be effectively handled by such machines! The probability distribution
function of a topological system is a normal distribution function meaning the higher the number
of bits in the topology the higher the computing power and price of the machine and the lower the
number of bits in the topology the lower is the computing power and the price of the machine. In
software development, for a best fit algorithm design and verification we, computer scientists,
typically use regression method which also impacts highly on price for such software.

Academe

Statistics is very important in education as it helps in collecting, presenting analysis

and interpreting data. It also helps in drawing general conclusion. The field of education has a
number of challenges in terms of policy planning, and statistics are particularly important as they
often provide some of the only objective information that administrators use when making
organizational and curricular decisions. Without this hard data in place, often nothing separates
the merits of the various arguments that people on different sides of policy decisions make
supporting their own cases. The test score trends are one of the most commonly used statistics in
the field of education. They are used to evaluate the effectiveness of classroom teachers and the
validity of the tests themselves as well as the effects of various risk factors on educational
outcomes. Standardized tests take their value from the fact that all students in a particular state or
region take them, showing competency in a way that individual grades cannot because grades
vary by teacher.
Another statistic that plays an important role in educational policy planning is the comparison of
test scores and other objective outcomes for members of various ethnic subgroups. Because of the
risk factors that accompany specific subgroups, educational planners are charged with the task of
closing the achievement gaps between various ethnic subgroups as well as between the student
body as a whole and students of low socioeconomic status.

3. What are the roles of statistics in computer application?

Statistics is a scientific approach to analyzing numerical data in order to enable us to

maximize our interpretation, understanding and use. It helps us turn data into information; that is
data that have been interpreted, understood and are useful to the recipient. Put formally, for your
project, statistics is the systematic collection and analysis of numerical data, in order to
investigate or discover relationships among phenomena so as to explain predict and control their
occurrence. The possibility of confusion comes from the fact that not only is statistics the
techniques used on quantitative data, but the same word is also used to refer to the numerical
results from statistical analysis. Computer technology applies very earlier in the statistical work
than in other fields. Statistics is used for data mining, speech recognition, vision and image
analysis, data compression, artificial intelligence, and network and traffic modeling.
A statistical background is essential for understanding algorithms and statistical properties that
form the backbone of computer science.
