STUDY GUIDE & TIPS FOR EXAM 2 PREPARATION

Pre-requisites: The HW problems are done as scheduled (with 2-3 day deviation allowed)
I. WHAT TO STUDY
1. Chapter 3
• One dimensional heat conduction in cartesian, cylindrical, and spherical
coordinates and thermal resistance network analogy
• Overall heat transfer coefficient in presence of radiation and convection.
• Integrating 1-D governing equations with heat generation in slab or cylinder or
sphere and applying appropriate boundary conditions (while also applying
thermal resistance network concept)
• Developing differential equations for 1-D heat conduction in case of extended
surfaces.
• Using existing fin equations for engineering application problems (know how this
is used in conjunction with concepts from chapter 4, 5, and 11 as learnt in Weeks
4 and 5).
2. Chapter 4
• Know how to apply the conduction shape factors for engineering applications.
Typically, this can be asked in conjunction with thermal resistance network and
chapter 5 or 11 problems.
3. Chapter 5
• Know when to apply lumped capacitance (aka lumped parameter) approach.
• Know how to set up governing first order differential equation due to energy
balance along with proper initial conditions
• Know the methods (although you will not be using the methods) to solve
nonlinear first order differential equation numerically.
• Know how to combine concepts from chapter 3(thermal resistance network,
uniform internal generation, fins) and chapter 4 (conduction shape factor) with
those related to lumped capacitance method.

II. HOW TO STUDY
4. Use (at least) the time allotted in Syllabus for Exam preparation (Prepare some, Take
Sample Exam, determine what needs to be fixed, and study some more). If you have not
been studying regularly like recommended in syllabus, you might need to allot 2.5 times
more time.

5. For Exam 2 and all other exams, as part of your weekly HW, you should be observing
which equations are often used (from current chapter and previous chapters), any special
technique/reasoning you learnt by doing HW problems, and then creating
equation/formula sheet or special reference notes with next exam in mind.
