Author

Eric Arthur Blair who is actually known as George Orwell was born in 1903 and first published his
book Animal farm in 1945. The book tells the story of a group of animal that takes over the farm of a
human farmer. The animals hope on a society where everybody is equal. This however doesn’t
happen because of their leader Napoleon.
Genre

The book is fiction because the story never actually happened. The story is based on some events
that happened in Russia. The genre of the book is political satire. This is because the book entertains
with politics.

Plot

In the story the animals take over the farm and write down 7 rules on a wall. The pigs become
leaders of the animals. The pigs keep becoming more like humans, they first move into the house and
sleep in beds. When one of the animals tells them that the rule says you are not allowed to sleep in
beds because that was one of the rules, the rule was changed but nobody knew. The pigs also got
more food than others and they didn’t have to work as hard. This al happened because Napoleon
took over. Before Napoleon became the leader the animals had Snowball who treated the animals
better. The animals try to build a windmill so they can have power and need to work less hard but
the windmill keeps getting ruined. Eventually the windmill was done but the animals didn’t use it for
power but for food. Eventually Napoleon and the pigs become even more human and start walking
on their two paws. The pigs and dogs also become friends with the humans.

Character description

First you have the main character: Napoleon. Napoleon is a pig and is the leader of all the animals.
He tells everybody what is right and wrong but makes sure that it is all for his own good. Napoleon
makes sure he has the most comfortable bed and the most food. He is very smart and knows how to
keep the animals under control.

Next you also have Boxer. Boxer is a horse. Boxer has 2 motto’s: I will work harder and Napoleon is
always right. Boxer is a really strong and hardworking horse and is always willing to put in extra hours
for the farm without needing anymore food for it. He always comes to work even if he is in pain.

Last you also have Squeler. He becomes important later in the story. Squeler announces everything
that Napoleon has decided. He is also a pig. He is not important earlier in the story because Snowball
was still there and when Snowball first leaves Napoleon makes the announcements himself. The
reason Squeler starts making the announcements is because Napoleon starts to feel less safe. This is
also why when Napoleon does make the announcement himself is protected by dogs.
