GLOBAL LEGACIES OF IMPERIALISM

Grade: 10-1 and 10-2 Social Studies Lesson Title: Global Legacies of Imperialism
Lesson Duration: 90 minutes

Overview of lesson
In this lesson students will explore the lasting legacies that imperialism has had throughout the world. We will
begin by reviewing the two case studies we looked at before in regards of New Imperialism: China and India.
Then, students will participate in a jigsaw activity to explore two case studies of imperial legacies: Rwanda and
South Africa.

economic and social impacts of historical globalization
Students will assess the impacts of historical and imperialism
globalization on Indigenous and non-Indigenous
peoples.  2.11 analyze contemporary global issues that have origins
in policies and practices of post-colonial governments in
Canada and other locations (consequences of residential
schools, social impact on Indigenous peoples, loss of
Indigenous languages, civil strife)

 A whole class discussion to gauge students understanding
 An exit ticket where I ask students the one thing they took away from today’s lesson.

Lesson Procedures
Introduction (10 min.):
We will begin the lesson with a quick review of our two previous case studies: India and China.
 How were they affected by Imperialism?
 What do you remember about these two countries?
 What did Gandhi do in India?
o What was he protesting?
Body (65 min.):
Look at the lasting impacts of imperialism in India (20 minutes)
 Through the exploration of the impacts of imperialism in India I
will model to students the information they will be looking for in
the case studies we will look at today.
The class will be divided into two: Group A will explore the Apartheid
article and Group B will explore the Rwanda article.
 Students read their articles and make the necessary notes (10 While students are discussing will be
minutes) walking around and popping into
 Students share with someone in their same group (group A or their discussions to see what they are
group B) as them (10 minutes) discussing.
o I will provide guiding questions for them to follow if they
don’t know where to start
 The pair of students will share their article with a pair of students
not in their group (15 minutes)
o Two students from group A will share with students from
group B
 While explaining tell them the class discussion is part of the
lesson and since students have had so much time to think, pair,
and share I will be using volunteers and calling students to
facilitate the discussion.
We come together as a class to discuss the articles (10 minutes)
 To what extent should society respond to the legacies of historical
globalization?
o Should countries have stepped in and help?
Closure (15 min.):
Students go back to their seats. I will hand out flash cards and students will begin to write down the one thing
they took away from today’s lesson. Students will be able to collaborate with their peers, but they must turn in
their own flash card. When students are done, I will collect their flash cards and I will sanitize their desks and get
them ready to transition to their next class.
