ACTIVITY 2

FUNCTIONS OF SOME ALKANES

OBJECTIVES:

1. To be familiarized with the different alkanes given, and its structures.

2. To enumerate some functions from the different alkanes provided.
3. To give importance of alkanes in our everyday lives.

PROCEDURE

1. The instructor will provide at least five different 5 different alkanes. Identify the biological
functions of the given alkanes.

Alkanes Structure Functions

Ethane *a natural gas component

*used for the production of ethylene, which
can be used for creating:
- plastics,
- ethyl alcohol,
- automotive antifreeze, and
- detergent

Butane * a petroleum-derived gaseous liquid that

is used for:
- camping,
- backyard cooking,
- cigarette lighters,
- aerosol propellant, and
- refrigerant (isobutane)
* combined with propane, it is sold as
liquified petroleum gas (LPG), that is
used for heating cars, and some home
appliances.

Pentane * used in the production of polystyrene

foam
* used in geothermal power stations
*used in liquid chromatography
* at room temperature, it is used as a
laboratory solvent.
 * used in the production of high-octane
fuels (isopentane)

Cyclobutane Some derivatives of cyclobutene were

used for:

* a common anticancer drug (carboplatin)

* also found in some bacteria that helps in

the anaerobic ammonium oxidation , where
it protects them from toxins, which helps
them to remove ammonia nitrogen in
wastewater (pentacycloanammoxic acid-
a ladderane with 5 cyclobutane units).

* used for the treatment of hepatitis C

(boceprevir)

* analgesics (nalbuphine)

Cyclopentane * commonly used in the pharmaceutical

field for a variety of treatments, that
includes:
- analgesics,
- sedatives,
- hypnotics,
- antitumor agents,
- CNS depressants,
- prostaglandins, and
- insecticides

CONCLUSION
From this activity, I have learned about alkanes, some of its structures, and its different
functions, in our everyday lives. I have discovered from this activity that there are several types
and forms of alkanes in our surroundings, and most of them have functional uses. Whether in the
industry, or in the biological and pharmaceutical fields, alkanes bring a significant role in creating
these things to make our lives easier. Also, with the help of science and research, we have found
different ways to find benefits and advantages in these compounds. Hopefully, in the future, we
can discover and formulate more uses of alkanes, so that we can expand its usage and many
people, can benefit in using these in their daily lives.
