LIGHT

REFRACTION
The bending of light when it
goes from one medium to
another is called Refraction.
This happens when light
travels with different speed
throught different media such
as air, water and glass.
REFRACTION

Refraction Occurs No Refraction

LAW OF REFRACTION
1st Law: The incident ray, the normal at the point of
incidence and the refracted ray all lie in the same
plane.

2nd Law: The ratio of the sine of the angle of

incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction is a
constant.

sin i 𝑐
=n n=
sin r 𝑣

n = index of refraction of a material

c = speed of light in vacuum
v = speed of light in material
i = angle of incident
r = angle of reflection
INDEX OF REFRACTION
The Medium

denser to a rarer
02 When light travels from a
denser to a rarer medium it
is refracted away from the
normal.
rarer to a denser
When light travels from a 01
rarer to a denser
medium it is refracted
towards the normal.

of light

The apparent depth decreases as you

view the object more from the side.
The apparent depth is greatest when
the object is viewed from vertically
above it.

LENS EQUATION
01 02 03

f = focal length, (+) if convex and (-) if concave

s = object’s distance P = power of lens
s’ = image’s distance, (+) behind the lens, (-) in front of lens h = object’s height
M = magnification h’ = image’s height
EXAMPLE
An object with a height of 3 cm is placed at a distance of 10 cm from the
convex lens which has a focal length of 6 cm. Determine the height of the
image!

Answer:
EXERCISE

1. A pencil 1 cm high is in front of the concave lens with a focus of

2 cm. If the object distance is 6 cm then determine:
a. Image’s disance
b. Magnification
c. Image’s height

2. An object 3 cm high placed in front of the concave lens with a

focus of 2 cm. If the object distance is 4 cm, then determine the
image distance, the magnification of the image, the height of the
image and the properties of the image.
