Course Description
This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of personal computing and commonly used software
applications for a PC. The course includes practical exercises using popular application software
packages. Students may not receive credit for CGS1100 and also for CGS1570.

This course will provide an overview of hardware components, operating systems, e-mail, Internet,
networks, and application software. No pre-requisite classes or computer skills are required.

Your Teaching Assistant

The course is very unique in that you have a Teaching Assistant that will answer your email questions,
oversee your discussions, grades, concerns, and will host tutoring/office hours for you. In the event
that you need to contact someone, you will need to contact the Teaching Assistant. Your Teaching
Assistant is a student in the Computing program. We are very fortunate to have a program that has
such talented pre-professionals that will likely go on to graduate and become Software Developers,
Professors, or who knows maybe CIOs or even CEOs! Again, we are happy to have our Teaching
Assistants on board and that the School of Computing supports this unique and valuable environment.
You will learn more about them in the Discussion Board Forum ‘Introduce Yourself’.

Your Teaching Assistant’s office is available via CGS 1100 Canvas Zoom.
o Please drop in to Canvas Zoom during tutoring/office hours to see your TA or another TA for
the course.
o Email is the preferred communication tool.
o Email will be returned within 24 hours during the week (Monday thru Friday), but often your
TA will respond to you much more rapidly. If you do not receive a response within 24 hours,
please kindly re-send the message as it may have been received at an ‘off time’.
o If you have given them 2 business days to reply, but have not received a response,
please contact Professor Marshall with your request showing when you contacted the
TA.
o The TA may not be able to respond to email on weekends and holidays.
o If you cannot meet the TA for tutoring/office hours, be sure to join the Canvas Conference
office hours that are hosted online each week. Thereafter the tutoring/office hours, you may
email your TAs with screenshots and follow-up with questions.

Missing Assignments Requirements

Missing multiple assignments and/or assessments will result in you failing this course. I don’t put this
in to scare you, I want you to participate on a regular basis, so you get the most from this course.

Textbooks and Required Materials: Windows Computer

Rent or Purchase Your Class Textbook Access through the UNF Bookstore’s IncludeEd OptIn
Program through Follett or Directly through CGS 1100 Canvas course from the Book Publisher
You are required to rent or purchase your access code (to the electronic version of the hard copy books
and assignments via the SIMnet system) through the IncludeEd (OptIn) via the UNF bookstore’s
Follett system: http://includedcp.follett.com:80/OptIn/0647 Participating in the includED program
(opting-in) will allow you to access required materials at a discounted price, for a limited time.
You’ll be able to opt-in to required materials for your participating course until 1/16/2021 for Spring
21.

Alternatively, you can purchase your e-textbooks and code from the book publisher, McGraw Hill
from within the CGS 1100 Canvas course. Either option (bookstore or directly from CGS 1100 Canvas
through your SIMnet account) will provide you with your access code to SIMnet, the Software we will
use to complete our lessons, exams, majority of our projects, and final exam. If you choose to buy
your materials elsewhere ie craigslist, etc, you WILL run into problems of not having a valid SIMnet
account for more than the trial period. To register with SIMnet, follow the “Getting Started” document
found on the Canvas Homepage. You will find information on how to key in your access code, buy an
access code, or receive a temporary free trial if you are waiting for Financial Aid.

Office 365 ProPlus – Free Install

UNF offers Office 365 to you at no cost. To download Office 365 go to portal.office.com and sign in
with your myWings credentials. Once you do this, you will see a page with the Office applications
across the page. There will be a button that says "Install Office." If you have a Windows computer,
Office 365 provides you with access to Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, and several
other great software programs.

If you have a Windows machine, you will be able to install the following applications:

Revision date: 4/20/21 7

If you have a Mac Computer, Office 365 will only provide you with limited versions of Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, and Outlook. Office for Mac will not provide you with all the tools that you need for the
course. Mac users, head to the library to use a Windows computer to complete your work in the course.
Mac Office does not have all the features or tools in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint that you need for
the course. ***MAC OFFICE DOES NOT HAVE MICROSOFT Access! **** Mac users in the
past have had a number of issues in the course. You may not be able to score higher than 0% on
your projects exclusively with your Mac machine as many of the features from Microsoft are not
released for Mac Office. Fortunately, multiple attempts (generally 3) are provided to you to complete
your projects. As long as you have additional attempts remaining, you can complete the finishing
pieces of the project in the library on a Windows machine. Again, you will not be able to use
Microsoft Access on your Mac and will score 0% on the access projects if you try to complete the
project on a Mac. If you are a strong Mac user and have dual boot to Windows, a virtual machine, or
are ok with a very slow connection with Virtual Lab, then you might be ok. Caution! If all else fails,
plan your week out in advance to spend time in the library’s Windows computer labs. Below is what
Office 365 on a Mac provides. Again, the Mac Office applications have limited features and tools in
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Troubleshooting SIMnet

assignment. The system will logout due to inactivity or interruption in service.

Revision date: 4/20/21 8

Methods of Delivery
To be successful in this course you will need fast and reliable internet access to Canvas, SIMnet and
the Internet. Videos (mainly from Youtube) and simulations in SIMnet will also be used to deliver
content.

Overview of Work to Complete

The course requires you to purchase the books and code either electronically from the Bookstore. The
code included in the package is complete access to SimNet, which is a Software that includes lessons,
exams, projects, a full library, and much more. We will use SimNet and Canvas for 100% of the course
(SIMnet comprises more than 70% of the course). If you do not purchase and gain access to SimNet,
you will not be able to successfully pass this course. There will be required and graded discussions and
real life projects via discussion boards within Canvas. The discussions will cover topics from and
related to the Computing Essentials book and/or current computing topics. Students that create the
strongest posts, comments, and projects to the discussion board, may receive extra credit.

How to Succeed in this Course? And about how much work will you have to do?
On average, each week you will complete a lesson, exam, post and respond in the discussion boards,
and a project. On some occasions there may be more or less work. As you can see, this course is not
for those that procrastinate until the end of the semester. Each week will keep you on your toes and
engaged! You will want to start early and print each week’s checklist of work to keep you focused and
as a reminder for what you need to complete and by when.

Weekly Requirements
Each week we will cover both Microsoft Office and/or Computing Essentials content. The course is
outlined so that you can complete all your work during the week and leave your weekend free for
yourself for other studies/family, friends, etc. However, if you wish you work on the weekends, you
can complete the work prior to the week as all requirements will be visible on Fridays or sooner!
Announcements will occur on Fridays and Mondays. Lessons will be due on Tuesdays by 4pm, exams
on Wednesdays by 4pm, guided or independent projects due on Thursdays by 4pm, and discussion
posts/responses will be due on Fridays by 4pm. Late work may be accepted, but heavily deducted.

The following is an example of what most weeks will look like:

Getting Dropped from This Course

If you don’t complete all of your week 0 course assignments, you may be manually dropped from this
course in the first week.

What Assignments Do I Need to Complete to Prevent from Possibly Being Dropped?

Make sure you complete the following assignments to avoid being dropped from this course:
*Complete the CGS 1100 orientation requirements. Dates are posted within Canvas Calendar. If
you cannot complete the orientation requirements, contact your professor in advance.
*Complete your SIMnet Registration

Revision date: 4/20/21 9

--- Once you have setup your OptIn Account (as recommended) and SIMnet Registration,
complete the following: --
*Introduce Yourself Discussion in Canvas
*Complete the Word Chapters 1-2 & CE Ch 2 lesson and exam
*Complete SOLO (recommended)
Continue working on your Canvas and SIMnet assignments to stay ahead of your coursework!
You will need to be registered with SIMnet. It is critical that you get registered and start working in
SIMnet very early in the semester. The “Getting Started” document on the Canvas homepage will
provide registration details.

Course Expectations
Attendance:
The college recognizes punctual and regular attendance is the student’s responsibility. In an online
class this looks like weekly frequent and regular participation while working on assignments and
assessments in Canvas and SIMnet.
Students should schedule between 9 and 12 hours per week for this class.
In the event a last date of attendance is required upon grading this course, I will use the due date of the
last day you logged into the Canvas course.
Communication:
You are expected to check Canvas announcements and assignment due dates for updates daily. Canvas
and all other university-provided communication means can only be used for activities related to the
course topics. Failing to comply will constitute student misconduct with serious consequences.

Having trouble with an Assignment?

If you do not know what to do for the week’s assignment, software is giving you an issue, or just need
accountability, attend Tutoring/Office Hours ONLINE via CANVAS ZOOM in the CGS 1100
course as early as possible, or at least early in the week and ask for help. You will be treated fairly,
and we will help you get on the right page. We are friendly, approachable, and will be happy to see
you!

Assignments/Late Assignments – What If You Missed a Deadline

All assignments are due as per the Course Calendar.
Late work will be accepted if you have a legitimate reason, but a heavy deduction in your grade will
occur. Consideration may be given for unusual or extreme circumstances. This will be up to the
discretion of the instructor.

Steps You Need to Take If You Miss a Deadline

If you wish to be considered for an assignment deadline extension for SIMnet work, you must follow
these steps:
1) You must have an unusual or extreme circumstance that caused you to miss the assignment in
question
2) Scan in/attach documentation of your extreme circumstance to an email, send it to your TA’s email
and confirm that they receive it.
3) After we review your information, if an extension is warranted, they will send you an email to
confirm that you may complete the assigned work late.

It is the student’s responsibility to follow the course calendar and to meet the deadlines for all
assignments. Students who are unable to meet a deadline due to required participation in a verified
school activity must make arrangements with the instructor for acceptable times to turn in assignments.

Revision date: 4/20/21 10

Mid and End of Course Electronic Evaluation
To help instructors continually improve courses, the college expects 100% of the students enrolled in
class to complete online evaluations for each course.
Students will be expected to complete the course evaluation for this course, and five points of extra
credit will be awarded to all students who complete the mid evaluation.

Behavioral Expectations
Every student has the right to a respectful learning environment.  In order to provide this right to all
students, students must take individual responsibility to conduct themselves in a mature and
appropriate manner and will be held accountable for their behavior.  Students who disrupt the class or
behave inappropriately or disrespectfully, as determined by the instructor, may be required to leave the
discussion (resulting in loss of discussion points, etc).

As an online class, the instructor reserves the right to delete content posted by students that is deemed
inappropriate or disrespectful. Work that is deleted for such reasons will not be counted toward graded
assignments.

If conduct continues to be an issue, students may be referred to the Dean of Students and/or Student
Conduct for judicial action. It is the student’s responsibility to check their email to receive notification
of any scheduled appointments or other urgent communications.

Any student who has witnessed or experienced a violation of the student code may contact Student
Conduct at 620-3979, or email: universityconduct@unf.edu

Academic Misconduct
There are severe consequences of engaging in academic misconduct (cheating & plagiarism). The
School of Computing has a zero-tolerance policy and those who engage in such activities will be
risking their academic career at UNF. All work submitted by a student must represent his or her own
ideas, concepts, and current understanding. Students should not share assignments with other students.
All material found during research must be correctly documented to avoid plagiarism. Cheating or
plagiarism in any form is unacceptable and violations may result in disciplinary action ranging from
failure of the assignment to failure of the course. Repeated acts of academic dishonesty may have more
severe institutional ramifications. The consequences for cheating in this class are listed below:
o The student will receive a failing grade for the assignment.
o The action will be reported to Student Conduct.
o Secondary offenses may result in failure of the class.
o The action may result in academic misconduct and an unforgivable “F” grade.

In the gradebook, SIMnet not only shows an integrity violation, but all details are included (parties
involved, who created the work originally, what was copied ie the whole file, or just parts.)

If you cheat and take another’s work for your own, you will receive a 0, plus have the infraction on
your record. If you “help” (meaning enabling another student to cheat, which is just as bad) another
student by providing them with your file, you too will receive a 0 and have the infraction on your
record. If another student asks for your file, JUST SAY NO. Don’t go this route. It is not worth it!! The
student that provided the file as well as the student that submitted another’s file or even just a small

Revision date: 4/20/21 11

part of a file. Yes, you can ask each other questions, but do not ask “Can I have this week’s project?”
or “Here just have my project.” Everyone must do their own work. UNF, your future courses and
instructors, your future jobs and bosses, and most importantly your future self, depend on you to know
these skills and hold you accountable. Yes, the projects take time to complete, yes, they are very
tedious, but they train you to become very thorough and more confident with these applications. Do
not delay gaining the knowledge and skillset, or the ability to get the job done well! You will find that
ultimately, 99% of your future jobs will need to be at minimum competent in Computing and the
Applications!

Documentation of Academic Activity for Financial Aid Purposes

Students who are not marked as having engaged in academic activity by the end of the second week of
classes cannot and will not be provided federal aid for the course regardless of enrollment status.

Emergency Procedures
In the event classes are canceled for any reason, a notice will be posted to Canvas. Emergency
situations will also be announced through the college text and email alert system. The schedule may be
updated, stay tuned to Canvas notifications. In the event of power outages, the updates/notifications
may be delayed.

Suggestions for Success

You are responsible for your education. Please be encouraged to ask questions and seek clarification
when needed. Be mindful of the course calendar and make sure you know when assignments are due.
You can earn an A in this class if you do the work and on time.

Student Email Account

When communicating through email to your TA, all students must correspond through their UNF
email, see below for details to your email account. Know how to access it – and be sure to check it
often. If you have trouble with your email account, contact the help desk at 620-4357.

How to Login to Your School’s Email Account

You can access your UNF email account by going to https://mywings.unf.edu/, then look for the email

changed) do not need to Opt-In through IncludeEd, but they must reach out to Professor Marshall by
end of week 1 to be properly placed into the new SIMnet section.

What browser should I use to complete lessons and exams in SIMnet?

Chrome or Firefox. SIMnet software works generally best with Chrome. Internet Explorer, Safari, and
Edge will cause problems.

Common Problems with SIMnet

You have not installed Microsoft Office 365 for free from UNF. Students that have Chrome books
often think they have Microsoft Office 365, but it is usually the limited online version. Chrome book
users need to use an alternative computer for this course.

Using a school Windows computer and Chrome as your browser will nearly eliminate most, if not all
problems with SIMnet. In general, the most common issues that come up are:
 The Popup blocker blocks the program from running properly
 Not clearing cache in browser.
 Not updating your browser to the current version.
 Not passing the compatibility test within SIMnet system, see Systems Requirements Test, near
bottom of SIMnet page.

How to Retrieve Your SIMnet User Name and/or Password

Once you registered with SIMnet, you should not have to use your user name and password again
unless your session times out. However, if you need to access SIMnet through their login website
outside of Canvas you’ll need your user name and password.

You will need to go to the SIMnet login page, then click on “Forgot Credentials” link. Follow the
instructions to retrieve your user name and/or password.

What If You Encounter a Problem with a SIMnet Lesson

Majority of the Lessons you will complete will be in SIMnet. Once in a while, you may encounter an
issue and the software won’t give you credit on one of the steps. It is best to report it to SIMnet
technical support asap at 1-800-331-5094 as customer service can determine if it is an issue within
your browser/computer or if a known error is present. If there is a known error confirmed by SIMnet,
please contact Professor Marshall and your TA asap! Please try to NOT get upset as we can adjust
your grade later and allow you to re-attempt once the system has been restored. Simply move on to the
next activity and send your TA an email with respective screenshot(s) about the issue. If there are
known glitches we may give the entire class extra time to compensate for the error.

Professor, where do you recommend completing coursework for this class?

There are many Windows machines on campus. The University computers are monitored and
maintained 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by highly trained IT professionals to help ensure that they
work properly. Home computers/devices may not be set up and maintained properly which can cause
problems when completing assignments and assessments.

Use of Personal Computers/Devices

While you should be able to use your personal computer/device to complete many of your assignments
and assessments, it is possible that using a home computer/device may cause SIMnet not to work
properly. School computers are maintained and monitored by IT professionals, and these school
computers are available for you to complete your coursework. If you are working on a SIMnet
activity and encounter a problem, you can call the SIMnet support line at 1-800-331-5094. If you call
them be sure to get a case number. They may or may not be able to help you. It is your responsibility to
use a computer that will work properly with the SIMnet software. Even brand-new home computers
may cause problems. I will not extend deadlines for non-emergencies so be sure to begin your work
early each week.

Can my TA or Instructor help me if I encounter a problem using my personal computer/device?

No, we cannot help you. We are not authorized to troubleshoot your personal computer/device
problems. However, the IT HelpDesk in the campus library can. Please meet with them asap or reach
them at helpdesk@unf.edu.

Minimum Home Computer/Device Software Requirements

While the minimum criteria for your home computer/device is listed below, this does NOT guarantee
that your computer/device will work properly. Using a school computer is always recommended.
o Chrome browser
o Microsoft Windows 10 or 8

Revision date: 4/20/21 15

o Microsoft Office 2016/Office 365 Pro Plus: Many assignments (called projects) are specific to
Microsoft Office 2016/Office 365 and it will be difficult, if not impossible, to complete these if you do
not have access to Office 2016/Office 365. Most campus computers should contain Microsoft Office
2016/Office365 so feel free to use them. Microsoft Office 2013 will also work with the course
projects.

What to Do If You Run into an Issue on Your Home Computer

The first thing you should do is run a “Systems Requirements Test” on your own computer. Here are
the steps you need to follow:

Step 1. Access CGS 1100 Canvas course > Assignments > select a lesson or exam
Step 2. Click on the question mark in the upper hand side of the main screen.
Step 3. Click on Technical Support.
Step 4. Check System Status.
Step 5. Fix any deficiencies that are noted by the diagnostic test

If you are still having issues, contact the SIMnet Support line. Also note that even if your computer
“passed” the System Requirements Test, this is no guarantee that SIMnet will work properly which is
why we always recommend that you use a school computer.

Can I use a Mac for this class?

If you have a MAC, you can do all of your work and receive full credit. However, you will need to
install additional software. Mac does not compete with Microsoft products near as well as the parent
company of Office. For web-based lessons and exam assignments and assessments, any operating
system should work just fine (but please read the notes above regarding home computer usage.) Some
assignments (called guided or independent projects) require you to use a PC (or Remote Desktop)
since you will need to use MICROSOFT Word 2019/365, Excel 2019/365, Access 2019/365 and
PowerPoint 2019/365. You will not be able to use Office for Mac to complete all projects. You will
need to either use a compatible Windows computer or login to Remote Desktop that has the proper
Office programs installed for these activities.

Can I use a Chromebook for this class?

No. If you have a Chromebook, you can NOT do your projects for this course as your machine cannot
install Office 365. You will need to have an alternative plan. If you can visit the UNF library, you may
be able to checkout a laptop for the semester. Go to https://libguides.unf.edu/students/checkout to learn
more. You may reach the Library by phone: 904-620-2615, text: 904-507-4122, or email at:
ask@unf.libanswers.com during working hours.

Storage Device Is Required

Students will need a storage device of their choice. UNF faculty advise that you use OneDrive or a
flash drive [also called a thumb drive or jump drive] and a notebook for notes. If you are working on
your personal computer/device, you can save work directly to your hard drive but it is suggested that
you back up your work.

Office 365 and Office 2016

Office 365 and Office 2016 – What Is the Difference?
Great question. If you choose to use your own computer, you will need the latest Microsoft Office
product, often referred to as Microsoft Office 2019. To make things more complicated, Microsoft
offers different versions of Office 2019, one of these being Office 365.

Revision date: 4/20/21 16

Students must have access to the 2019 or Office 365 version of Word, Excel Access, and PowerPoint.
Both options listed below include the required programs.

Microsoft Office 2019 – this a suite of products from Microsoft which is bundled together. This
bundle includes Word 2019, Excel 2019, Access 2019, and PowerPoint 2019 (often referred to as PP),
just to name a few. This option will work for UNF students but it’s often more expensive than Office
365 (see below for details.)

Office 365 ProPlus includes Word 2019, Excel 2019, Access 2019, and PowerPoint 2019. After you
install it, you’ll need to renew your subscription with Microsoft on an annual basis. Office 365 ProPlus
(for PCs) will give you what you need for this class

Will Office 2010 Work?

Certain assignments, called Projects, will NOT work properly with anything other than Microsoft
Office 2016 or 2013. Office 2010 products will cause problems which will result in a lower grade.
This is why we always suggest that you use a school computer if you don’t have Microsoft Office 2016
on your home computer.
