USE OF THE TABLES ILLUSTRATED

Example 1: Required to find the Ascendant and the Tenth House at Calcutta for 2-55
PM IST on the 12th June 1947.
The time 2.55 pm IST which converted by the local time correction
for Calcutta, viz, + 23 m 30 s ( vide table at the end of the book)
gives the local time of the moment as 3h 18 m 30 s P.M (2h
55 m + 23m 30 s) .The latitude of the Calcutta is 22degree 35
minute North.
Now it is required to find the sidereal time for this moment.
1 Sid. Time for June 12 ( Table I) = 5h 20m 31s
2 Correction for 1947 (-) 1m 31s
3 Therefore, S.T. for June 12, 1947 ( noon) ( 1-2) = 5h 19m 00s
4 Correction for Calcutta (-) 0m 04s
5 Therefore, S.T. same date Calcutta Noon ( 3-4) = 5h 18m 56s
6 The given local time of the epoch is 3h 18m 30s
after the noon. This time interval having been
increased by the correction given in Table IV viz by
33s, we get 3h 19m 3 s. ( 3h 18m 30 s + 33s)
( Corrected time interval) (+) 3h 19m 3s
7 Therefore, Sid. Time for the epoch ( 5+6) = 8h 37m 59s
With this sidereal time we have to enter the table of ascendants
for the place viz, Calcutta as given on page ()
Against 8h 36 m, we get the ascendant as 6 s 12 degree 37
minute. Variation in 4 minutes as obtained from two successive
values is 54 min { i.e, 13 degree 31 minute (-) 12 degree 37
minute}. Hence from the proportional tables at the bottom of the
page, we get the variation for 1 minute as 13’, and hence for 59
secs as 13’ approximately. So the total variation for 1 m 59 s is 26’
approximately.
8 For S.T. 8h 36m, the ascendant = 6s 12 d 37 m
9 Variation for 1m 59 s + 26m
10 Hence for S.T. 8h 37m 59s, Ascendant (8+9) = 6s 13 d 03 m
11 Now, from the Ayanamsa correction for 1947 is (-) 0d 08m
12 Hence, the required Ascendant ( 10-11) = 6s 12 d 55 m
i.e, the Ascendant is 12 degree 55 minutes of the nirayana sign
Tula ( 6s represents the sign Tula)
Similarly, from the table of the tenth house (M.C.), we get
A For S.T. 8h 36m, the M.C = 3s 13 degree 37 min
B Here, Variation for 4 min is 58’; hence proportionate + 29 min
variation for 1m 59 s
C A+B = 3s 14 degree 6 min
D Ayanamsa correction (-) 0 deg 8 min
E C-D { Tenth House or M.C.} 3s 13 degree 58 min
So the Nirayana Tenth House or M.C. is 13 degree 58 minute of
the sign 3 s (KARKATA)
