Null Hypothesis - H0: Major and Disease knowledge are Independent.

Alternative Hypotheses-Ha: Major and Disease knowledge are Dependent.

1B.) For the above distribution to identify whether a relationship holds between a students major
and knowledge of disease, I would recommend Chi-Square Test for Independence to determine the
relationship given the assumptions below holds:
* The data in the cells should be count/frequency of students rather than percentages for
each level of knowledge
* All categories are mutually exclusive of each other

1C.) Firstly, we will calculate the expected cell count (1,1) = (100 * 40)/400 = 10
cell count (1,2) = (100 * 120)/400 = 30
cell count (1,3) = (100 * 240)/400 = 60
cell count (2,1) = (300 * 40)/400 = 30
cell count (2,2) = (300 * 120)/400 = 90
cell count (2,3) = (300 * 240)/400 = 180

Thus, the assumptions holds that expected cell count is greater than 10 for each cell.

Now we can calculate test statistics X2 = ∑ (O – E)2 / E

O = observed value and E = expected value
For Cell (1,1), Test Statistics X2(1,1) = (21-10)2/10 = 12.1
For Cell (1,2), Test Statistics X2(1,2) = (39-30)2/30 = 2.7
For Cell (1,3), Test Statistics X2(1,3) = (40-60)2/60 = 6.67
For Cell (2,1), Test Statistics X2(2,1) = (19-30)2/30 = 4.03
For Cell (2,2), Test Statistics X2(2,2) = (81-90)2/90 = .90
For Cell (2,3), Test Statistics X2(2,3) = (200-180)2/180 = 2.22

T statistics – Sum of all = 28.62 Answer

Also, since 28.62 > χ2df=1(0.05)=3.841, we can reject the null hypothesis and conclude that major
and knowledge of the disease are related.
6A.) Coefficient of determination, denoted by R , in above case is 69.57 %, which could be
2

interpreted as follow:
“ 69.57 % variation in a dependent variable could be explained or attributed to the independent
variables used in above case. This shows a strong linear relationship between the two variables “

6B.) Conclude the relationship is significant at Alpha = .05 as the Significance F (.00141) for the
independent variable is much less than alpha which means we would be able to reject the null
hypothesis and prove the alternative is valid.

This mean, calculated test statistics would be either > 1.96 or < 1.96 allowing us to reject null
hypotheses. { F Significance(.00141) < Alpha (.05).
