Midterm Exam 2,1

Aerospace Structures
Aeronautical engineering
Names: ______________________________________ Date: _____________________

A new design of a GPS satellite is proposed with a central cylindrical structure called the central bus, in which every subsystem is attached to it. In
order to make a preliminary analysis of the structural viability of the element, it is desired to analyze the loads regarded to the launch, which may
cause a compression in the bus structure as it is presented in Figure 1.

Figure 1 ULA launch vehicle, (payload section), the arrows represents the load direction due to a change in axial acceleration.
The rocket selected for the mission is the Atlas V-500 ULA rocket. The ULA-500 user’s guide presents the following load factor envelope:

Figure 2 Design limit load factors for the Atlas V ULA launch vehicle.
The weight of the satellite and subsystems is 12000kg, and this weight is concentrated in the top on the undeployed position of the satellite as it
is presented in Figure 1. Here you can see a general overview of the deployed satellite:

Figure 3 GPS satellite general layout with the central structure highlighted.
Moreover, the main structure of the satellite is made of Al7075 (𝐸 = 70000𝑁/𝑚𝑚2 , 𝜈 = 0,33) with eight stiffeners located every 45° as it is
presented below (all measurements are in mm):

Please, find a) whether the structure will buckle under the submitted load, and, b) which will be the buckling load considering the stiffened panel
analysis proposed by Gerard and Becker. c) What would be your further recommendations for the design?. Assume that the skin is simply supported
on each edge.
A thin plate with 𝑡 = 2𝑚𝑚, sides 𝑎 = 50𝑐𝑚 and 𝑏 = 20𝑐𝑚, 𝜈 = 0,33 and 𝐸 = 70000𝑁/𝑚𝑚2 simply supported is submitted to a combination of
bending and torsional moments 𝑀𝑥 = 20𝑁𝑚/𝑚𝑚, 𝑀𝑦 = 30𝑁𝑚/𝑚𝑚, and 𝑀𝑥𝑦 = 30𝑁𝑚/𝑚𝑚.

Please:

 Find the maximum direct stresses in the plate.

 Find the principal stresses.
 Find the principal moments.
 Find the planes on which the principal moments will act.
 Find if the plate will buckle under the conditions of moments.
 If the plate buckles, how many numbers of waves it will be present.
