INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:
(i) Attempt all questions in section A and NOT more than five questions from section B.
(ii) All section B questions carry equal marks.

(iii) All necessary calculations must be done on the same sheet of paper as the rest of
the answer. Therefore, no paper shall be given for rough work.

(iv) Graph paper shall be provided.

(v) Silent, non-programmable calculator may be used.

SECTION A:

1. Express 0.341666… in the simplest form of a

b.
2. Find the lowest common multiple (L.C.M) of 18, 40 and 75.

3. Given that f(x) = x 2 , find the value of f 1  5

5
4. Two sets M and N are such that n(M) = 8, n(N) = 11, n(M  N) =5 and n(M  N)1=3. Find
 
n( ), where is the universal set.

5. Given that 2ya + 3b is parallel to 24a + yb, find the value of y.

6. 10022 is a number in base three. The same number is represented as 155y. Find the
value of y.

7. A line passes through the points (2,6) and (-1,5). Find the coordinates of the point of
intersection of the line and the y-axis.

8. If the rate of interest of a borrower is increased from 7% to 12%, he pays Sh.3500

more in simple interest in one year. How much money did he borrow?

9. A boy spends 1/3 of his weekly allowance on transport and ¾ of the remainder on
food. If he is left with a balance of Sh1000, how much is his weekly allowance.

10. Find the volume of a right pyramid with a rectangular base 6cm by 8cm and slant
edge of 13cm long.

SECTION B:

11. A random sample of 100 women was taken to find out how many were literate (L),
Married (M) or had an income generating project (P). The findings were as follows;

n(L) = 47, n(M) =59, n(P) = 52 n(L  M) = 30,n(L  P) = 24, n(M  P) = 34.

14 of the women were illiterate, un married and without an income generating

project.

Using a Venn diagram;

(a) find the number of women who were literate, married and had an income
generating project.
(b) determine how many women were neither literate nor married.

2
12. In a triangle AOB, OB = b and OA = a. N is a point on OB such that ON:NB=1:2 and M
is the mid-point of AB. OM and AN intersect at Q.

(a) Express in terms of a and b the vectors AB, OM and AN.

(b) If OQ = λOM, express OQ interms of λ, a and b.
(c) If AQ = tAN express AQ interms of t, a and b.
(d) By expressing OQ interms of t, a and b, find the values of λ and t.

13. A lorry set off at 7:00am from A to station B, 360km away. It travelled at a constant
speed of 50kmh-1 for 2 hours. The lorry then stopped for 1 hour. It then proceeded
at a steady speed for 4 hours to station B.
Amini-bus left station B at 8:00am for station A and moved non-stop for 4 ½ hours.

(a) Using a scale of 2cm to represent 40km on the vertical axis and 2cm to
represent 1hour on the horizontal axis, draw on the same axes, distance –time
graphs for the lorry and the mini-bus.

(b) Use your graph to find the;

(i) time when the two vehicles met.
(ii) distance from B when the vehicles met.
(iii) average speed for the mini-bus.

3
14. (a) A man invested a sum of money at 14% p.a compound interest. His interest for
the second year was sh.6384. Find the sum of money invested.

(b) The following is an advertisement for a photocopier.

GET YOURSELF A PHOTOCOPIER CHEAPLY WHILE STOCKS LAST

TERMS: CASH AT LIST 960,000
OR HIRE PURCHASE
DEPOSIT 15% OF MARKED PRICE AND PAY EITHER USH75,000 WEEKLY FOR 12
WEEKS OR USH245,000 MONTHLY FOR 4 MONTHS.

Calculate

(i) the saving a customer would make by buying the photocopier on cash terms
rather than the weekly hire purchase.

(ii) the percentage profit made on the monthly hire purchase if the whole sale
cost of a photocopier is 17.5% below the cash price.

15. (a) (i) Determine the range corresponding to the domain -3, -2, 0, 1, 3, 4 for
the mapping x x2 + 1.
(ii) Represent the mapping in (i) on an arrow diagram.

(b) Given the functions h(x) = x + 2, g(x) = x2 and f(x) = -x; find the values of x for
which g h(x = f(x).

passing through the points P(3, 4) and Q (1, 10).
(b) A line l has gradient 3 and passes through the point R(2, 1). Find the
4
coordinates of two points which lie in the line l and 5 units from R.
