thickness of 0.025 cm. A random sample of 20 washers was found to have an average thickness
of 0.024 cm with a s.d. of 0.002 cm. Does the sample indicate desired thickness of washer at. α =
5%?

Q 4 The manufacturer of a certain make of electric components claims that the components have
mean life more than 20 months. A random sample of 10 such components gave the following
life times (in months) : 24 26 30 20 19 18 26 22 18 29. Can you regard the
producer’s claim to be valid at 1% level of significance?

Q 5 You are working as a purchase manager for a company. The following information has been
supplied to you by two manufacturers of electric bulbs.

Company A Company B

Population S.D. of life (in hours) 82 93

Sample size 100 120

Sample mean life (in hours) 1300 1248

Would you purchase bulbs from company A on the basis of statistical evidence at 5% level of
significance?

Q 6. The average articles produced by two machines A and B per day on the basis of records of
65 days production are 200 and 250 respectively. It is known that s.d.s of articles produced by
two machines A and B are 20 and 25 respectively Can you regard Machine B to be more
efficient than A at 1% level of significance?
Q 7 The mean yield of wheat from a district A was 210 kgs. with standard deviation 11 kg. per
acre from a sample of 10 plots. In another district B, the mean yield was 220 kgs. with standard
deviation 11 kgs. from a sample of 15 plots. Test whether there is any significant difference
between the mean yield of wheat in the two districts. Use α = 5%.

Q 8 Salesman X claims that he makes larger sales than salesman Y. The following information
was obtained after examining the accounts the two salesmen.
X Y
Number of months 10 17
Average sales Rs.6200 Rs.5600
Standard deviation of sales Rs.690 Rs. 600

Is salesman X’s claim true at 5% level of significance?

Q 9 The yields (in kgs. per plot) of jute from 9 plots in subdivision A and 7 plots in subdivision
B are given below.

Subdivision A : 57 81 71 85 86 37 72 51 63
Subdivision B : 55 56 54 45 72 80 60

Test at 5% level of significance whether the two subdivisions have same mean yield per plot.

Q 10 Ten computer dealers in different areas of the city were asked the prices of laser jet printers
(in thousands of Rs.) of two companies A and B. The prices recorded are given below.
Dealer Company A Company B
1 17 20
2 18 19
3 16 17
4 18.5 18
5 17.8 18.5
6 16.9 17.2
7 17.6 19
8 16.6 17.5
9 20 21
10 18.6 19.3
Is it reasonable to conclude that on an average the printer of company A is cheaper than that
of Company B? Given α = 1%

Q 11 Performance test was administered to five persons before and after they are trained. The
results are given below.
Candidate 1 2 3 4 5
Score Before training 110 120 123 132 125
Score After training 120 118 125 136 121
Test whether the training is effective. Use 5% of level of significance.

participant in the program loses weight during 6 months. To test the claim the weights (in
pounds) before and after the program for 10 selected participants as follows:
