The United Nations is an international organization formed after the Second World War to replace the League
of Nations as a world peace-keeping body. Highly-structured, the United Nations was organized by its Charter into
six principal bodies, each with specific powers and responsibilities: the General Assembly, the Security Council, and
four other important but lesser-known bodies.
The most widely-publicized body of the United Nations is the General Assembly. It is the only body in the
organization (41) all member states are represented. The Assembly (42) at least once annually, and (43)
principal function is to provide a forum for the discussion of worldwide economic, political, and social issues. The
General Assembly includes among its various responsibilities the admission of new member states to the United
Nations and the approval of the organization’s budget. It is also empowered to pass various advisory resolutions.
The Security Council is also mentioned often in world affairs. It has only eleven member states, five of them
(the United States, China, France, Great Britain, and the U.S.S.R.) (44) and the others elected for two-year terms by
the General Assembly. The Security Council is the United Nations body that is held (45) responsible for the
maintenance of peace throughout the world. It can institute economic sanctions against particular countries, call for
the formation of military peace-keeping forces, and even involve itself in a country’s domestic problems if they pose
a (46) threat to international peace.
The lesser-known bodies of the United Nations are responsible for a variety of tasks from administrative
matters to international judgments. The Secretariat, for instance, handles all of the administrative duties of the United
Nations. This body is headed by the Secretary General, (47) serves a five-year term. Another body, the International
Court of Justice, is located at The Hague in the Netherlands and serves as the United Nation’s major judicial body.
Composed of fifteen judges chosen by the General Assembly and Security Council, it attempts to resolve (48)
between consenting member states. The United Nations Economic and Social Council, generally known as UNESCO,
(49) at least twice a year and is made up of eighteen nations elected for three-year terms by the General Assembly.
It is primarily charged with investigating and reporting (50) major international economic and social questions.
UNESCO also oversees the activities of several special United Nations agencies, (51) the Population Commission
and the Commission on Human Rights. And finally, the Trusteeship Council, perhaps the least familiar to the general
public of all United Nations bodies, (52) territories that are not yet self-governing, in the hope that the inhabitants
of these areas will peacefully and effectively achieve self-rule.
(53) , the United Nations is a complex organization, comprised of a number of individual bodies, each of
which has its own individual functions and specialized areas of concern. The founders of the United Nations seemed
to (54) that the task of handling world affairs would be a many-faceted responsibility – and one that could be
undertaken only by a (55) institution.

The alligator and the crocodile are two animals that are commonly confused with each other. The sole
survivors of the great group of reptiles, Archosauria, which included the dinosaurs, these animal families are unique
in our time. Certainly, alligators and crocodiles look alike. And even though these two animals do not share the same
biological family, few observers could note any obvious differences in their mannerisms. Yet their differences,
however subtle, play a large role in the survival of these animals. Although alligators and crocodiles resemble one
another in most aspects, such as basic appearance and habits, biologists note the superior ability of the crocodile to
survive.
Right from birth, crocodiles are better equipped to face threats from the environment. Both alligators and
crocodiles hatch from eggs and (56) by their mothers, (57) crocodile eggs incubate for one or two months longer
than alligator eggs. (58) they spend more time in the egg, crocodiles are four inches longer than alligators at birth.
The baby crocodiles stay close to their mother for the first few days of life, whereas baby alligators, by instinct, do
not. (59) , baby crocodiles are less vulnerable to predators than baby alligators are, and the greater number of
eggs (60) that more crocodiles will survive.
Their different habits also favor crocodiles. Native to warmer parts of Africa, Asia, Australia, and some island
groups, crocodiles (61) better to adverse living conditions than alligators are. Crocodiles will walk some distance
in search of water, if necessary, whereas alligators never stray from the bank of their rivers. Crocodiles can also be
found in brackish water, which alligators find unacceptable, and will swim out to sea, while alligators almost never
leave their river basins. In their natural habitat, crocodiles form colonies to protect themselves against predators.
Alligators, on the other hand, go their own separate ways and are therefore more vulnerable. Both species are
cannibalistic, but when basking in sunlight, crocodiles divide into groups of equal-sized animals, and smaller
crocodiles are (62) kept well away from larger ones. Alligators are cannibalistic to an even greater degree than
crocodiles, (63) they do not form any collective defenses. As a result, large alligators prey (64) on the young. In
the past, this natural predatory instinct (65) to keep the alligator population under control, but, as environmental
dangers increase, the alligator population may shrink to dangerous levels, and perhaps even approach extinction.
Even the destructive habits of humans have favored crocodiles. In recent times our species has become
virtually an enemy of the alligator. The search for alligator skin for shoes and handbags (66) a drastic decrease
(67) the population, as well as in the overall size of the animals. Land drainage by American developers has also
affected alligator population in this country, while in China, alligators have fallen prey to other forms of commercial
exploitation.
(68) , experts predict that crocodiles will most likely continue as a species whereas alligators may not.
Although alligators and crocodiles are amazingly similar, the small differences (69) them can ultimately prove quite
significant. These variations have favored the crocodile by enhancing its chances for survival. In a few centuries,
people may no longer mistake alligators (70) crocodiles. By then, the alligator might not be around to confuse the
issue.
