Lesson One: Roxaboxen

Lesson Objective:

The students will listen to the teacher read aloud and model fluent reading using the text, Roxaboxen.
The 3rd graders will each use and record information about what a community is and the reasons
people choose to live in specific communities throughout the mini-unit. The will use the text and
include at least 5 responses on the graphic organizer and include information about wants and needs.

Procedures:

1. Read aloud and discuss the book, Roxaboxen and then share Youtube video of the read aloud
including illustrations.
2. Share and model how to use a KWHL chart referencing what a community is and why people
choose communities.
3. Discuss the wants and the needs of people in a community.
4. Have the students use a Think/Pair/Share activity to talk about the pieces of information
included on their KWHL chart.
5. After sharing ideas from the Think/Pair/Share, the students will then be given 5 minutes to add
more information or questions to KWHL chart.
6. Students will also create a power point presentation showcasing the town and why people want
to love there.
