CHAPTER OVERVIEW:
Have students bring the text to class. At the beginning of this chapter, before students have read
it, spend some time on the opening page to build an initial mental model of the contents and
organization of the chapter. This will help students comprehend by building a rough overview of
what is to come. There are five comprehension aids on this and the next page:
1. Chapter Title
2. Chapter Outline
3. Key Concepts
4. Picture This
5. Main Idea
In addition to building prior knowledge, the instructor can help activate students’ prior
knowledge by asking them what they already know or remember about the Key Concepts, the
Main Idea, and the vignette in Picture This. A student can be asked to create a semantic map/web
on the board to record everyone’s contributions.

Lesson Plan #3: Symbolic Values. Again, demonstrate this lesson to the class if there
is time. A roll of pennies is needed plus a roll of your state’s new commemorative
quarter.
