Bearden is know for being the most creative and an original visual artist in the twentieth
century. Romare created an nonprofit two years after deceasing from his estates. Bearden
won many awards starting in 1970. In 1970, Bearden won a John Solomon Guggenheim
grant. In 1973, he received a Honorary Doctorate of Fine Art. In 1975, Romare won another
Honorary Doctorate. In 1976, Romare won a Gold Metal of Achievement in the arts. In 1977,
Romare won two more Honorary Doctorate awards. In 1978 Romare had a big year. Bearden
won three different awards and one of them were the Freedom Fighter Award. This award
came from the Atlanta Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored
People. In 1980, Romare Bearden day was announced in Oakland, California. Bearden won
something and have been recognized from this time to after his death. The last award
Bearden received before dying was the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Studio
Museum in Harlem. Even after Bearden’s death, he or his family were receiving
awards/recognition for his achievements.

Romare Bearden was a virtually self-taught artist. He was considered one of the most
important American artist in the twentieth century. Bearden’s artwork was creative and
thought-provoking. Romare depicted and focused on the African American culture when it
came to his artwork. When Romare Bearden started painting, this artwork was focused on
realism and religious themes. Bearden then transitioned into abstract and Cubist style
painting. This new transition focused on oil paintings and watercolor. Bearden was also
known for his magazine work. His photo-mange compositions were a popular aspect for
Bearden during this time. Bearden stamped his name on African Americans in many powerful
ways.
