Even the most ardent Republican could not have helped but be moved by the sight of the Queen
at Prince Philip’s funeral. She looked so vulnerable and forlorn, her face hidden behind her
mask, the pew empty beside her.
Perhaps in some ways the mask was a blessing. After all, her whole life has been acted out under
the gaze of the cameras. Maybe in this very personal moment of grief it suited her not to have her
every expression scrutinised, to be alone with her thoughts and emotions.
Even so, I am sure she would have relished the touch of a hand or even the simple proximity of
another human being. But no: Covid rules dictated that, like all those who have lost loved ones
during the pandemic, she said her final farewells to her husband of 73 years in total isolation.
Seeing her like that, as stoic and dutiful as ever, provoked a little pang of rage. Not just for the
Queen, who has given her life in service, alone in her sadness; but for all those who have
suffered similarly in the past year.

And not least because, given where we are now, it seems so unnecessarily cruel.
It makes no sense to me that, while hordes of the young and unvaccinated can gather in pub
gardens and mingle in shops, older, vaccinated folk such as the Queen are forced to socially
distance and mourn loved ones in numbers no greater than 30.
Most bonkers of all, if St George’s Chapel had been hosting a regular church service, it would
have been entitled to accommodate perhaps 100 people. Where is the logic, where is the
common sense?

Don’t get me wrong: I am delighted that the huge success of the vaccine rollout means life is
finally starting to get back to normal. I’m ecstatic at the long-overdue restitution of our freedoms
and independence, the relaxation of the draconian rules that have dominated life under Covid.
But I would happily trade my chance to browse the rails at Zara or share a drink with a friend if
it meant those in similar situations to the Queen could be treated with the compassion they
deserve.
I cannot understand how allowing vaccinated family members, who are probably already in each
other’s bubble, to pay their respects humanely can present any serious threat to the NHS.

Sarah Vine: She looked so vulnerable and forlorn, her face hidden behind her mask, the pew
empty beside her
Marking the death of a loved one is not like a birthday party or a book launch — something that
can easily be rescheduled. It is essential. The bereaved can’t help it. So why penalise them in this
way?
Because it does, in many respects, feel like a punishment. While the rest of the country more or
less goes about its business, returning to work and school, planning outings, beginning — slowly
but surely — once again to enjoy all that life has to offer, those who are already suffering the
most must somehow suffer even more. It is cruel beyond belief.
And it’s not just funerals. Last week, the Department of Health issued a directive that people in
care homes cannot leave the premises, for any reason whatsoever — a trip to the park or a stroll
to their local cafe — without being compelled to self-isolate for 14 days afterwards.
This doesn’t apply just to the very elderly, but also to people with learning difficulties — those
who are arguably most in need of these little glimpses of freedom for their mental and physical
wellbeing.
Quite apart from the huge challenges this presents — imagine having to explain to, say, a
severely autistic person or someone with dementia why they can’t leave their room or have any
human contact — it’s hard to see what the advantages would be since, again, this is a group of
people who have almost invariably been vaccinated.
The real threat to care homes comes from the 50 per cent or so of carers who have yet to be
inoculated, and who come and go every single day.
If the measure of a society is how it treats its most vulnerable, then what we are witnessing is the
death of decency.
It’s time to relax the rules on funerals and allow families to grieve with compassion and dignity;
and to lift these cruel restrictions on those who, through no fault of their own, are forced to live
in care.
I really feel for Trinny Woodall, losing her hair as a result of Covid. I’ve been losing mine for
decades now, and have never made any secret of my endless quest to find a solution.
I know in the grand scheme of things it’s hardly a big deal, and certainly not life-threatening —
but it can really affect a woman’s self-esteem.
There is one consolation, though: Covid-related hair loss is at least temporary, whereas the kind
that I and many women suffer from is sadly not. In the meantime, Trinny, if I can offer advice it
would be to go and see George Northwood.
I disguised my thinning locks for years with the help of his clever scissor hands, and even though
he has since tended much more glamorous tresses (the Duchess of Sussex, Claudia Winkleman
and Alexa Chung, to name but a few), he’s still a whizz at making a three-course meal out of a
starter-size portion, if you know what I mean.
So much respect for the beautiful Helen McCrory, who very sadly passed away from cancer last
week, at the age of 52.
She kept her diagnosis from all but her closest friends, saving every last breath for her husband,
Damian Lewis, and their two children.
In this age of oversharing — where even a stubbed toe can seem like an opportunity for self-pity
and publicity — it only underlines what a class act she was . . . and how greatly she will be
missed.
Barry Mason, who wrote the Tom Jones hit Delilah, has died at the age of 85, having been
awarded an MBE last year for services to music.
I must confess I’ve never liked the song, not just from a musical point of view but also because
the catchy chorus seems so at odds with the lyrics.
It is, after all, a song about a man who stabs a woman to death out of jealousy, which, especially
in these post-Sarah Everard times, seems an odd sentiment to celebrate. It’s also, of course, the
Welsh Rugby team’s unofficial anthem.
I know it was written in 1967, and that those were different times; but isn’t it time they found
something a bit less creepy to sing?
There is nothing worse than having a birthday when you’re not feeling your best. All those
happy wishes and kind gestures somehow only seem to make it worse.
So it would be somewhat trite to wish the Queen a happy 95th birthday today; but I do hope that
she is able to rest and recuperate from the events of the past few weeks — and do something she
loves surrounded by friends and family.
Forget footballers’ wives Coleen Rooney vs Rebekah Vardy; Marks & Spencer’s Colin The
Caterpillar vs Aldi’s Cuthbert is a far more entertaining legal battle, especially if you’ve been
following some of the hilarious Tweets from the Aldi camp.
We all know Marks & Spencer has made a fortune over the years from selling thinly disguised
own versions of designer brands. Bit cheeky now to try to have their cake and eat it.
There is something magical about those hills, a timelessness to the landscape that always — for
me at least — helps put all my woes into perspective.
