I. RESEARCH QUESTION

Does a person's SEX cause them to FEAR when they walk alone in their neighborhood at

night?

II. METHODS

Description of the General Social Survey

The GSS monitors societal change and studies the growing complexity of American
society. The GSS provides an unbiased opinion on what Americans think about issues as national
spending priorities, crime and punishment, intergroup relations, and institutions. It is conducted
by National Dara Program for the Social Sciences. The respondents are adults 18 years and
older.

Hypothesis & Justification for the Hypothesis

Women in general tend to fear certain neighborhoods when walking alone at night due to
its criminal activity around that area.

Description of the Variables

1.Women in general tend to fear more than men when walking alone at night in their
neighborhoods.

2.  Is there any area right around here - that is, within a mile - where you would be afraid

In this table you can see how many females versus males are afraid of waking at night in
their neighborhood. It shows that 73.8% of women fear walking alone at night compared to only
26.2% of males who also do.

IV. CONCLUSION AND FUTURE RESEARCH

Conclusion:

My hypothesis is that women tend to fear walking alone at night more in comparison to
men. In my GSS data, my hypothesis was correct over 73% of females said yes to fearing
walking at night while only 26.2% of males feared walking alone at night. Overall, females have
more to fear when walking alone at night compared to men.

Future Research:

In the future, I would like to consider the role of someone who is transgender. How
walking alone at night in certain neighborhoods affects them. Transgender people have always
been a target to those that oppose their nature. Including their opinion will open the subject to
more than just women and men.
