Section A – Lengths

A1 Centre back neck to waist

At the back of the garment, measure


from the centre of the neckline straight
down to the waistline.

A2 Centre back neck to hem

At the back of the garment, measure


from the centre of the neckline straight
down to the bottom of the hem.

A3 Centre back length (skirt)

At the back of the garment, measure


from the bottom of the waistband to the
bottom of the hem. If there is no
waistband, measure from the top of the
garment to the bottom of the hem.

from the centre of the neckline to the

seam length

Measure down the outside seam or the


side seam from under the waistband to
the trouser or skirt hem. For garments
with a high waist or grown on waist,
measure down from the top edge of
the waist seam to the hem of the
trouser or skirt.

A12 Bust point or empire seam


depth

Measure from the side neck point to


the bust point or the position of the
empire seam. Refer to the specification
if a specific measurement is required.

B1 Bust and chest

With the garment closed measure


across the front of the chest 2.5cm
down from the armhole seam.

B2 Bust /chest
(lingerie/camisole tops)

Fold the garment at the centre back


and the centre front so the garment lies
sideways. Measure from the fold at the
front, through the top of the side seam,
to the fold at the back. You may need
to imagine a line if the back is lower
than the side seam.

B3 Body width
(lingerie/camisole tops)

With the garment closed and lying flat,


measure across the back between the
armhole seams.

B4 Across front

With the garment closed, at the


specified distance down from the side
neck point, measure across the front
between the armhole seams.

B5 Across back

With the garment closed, at the


specified distance down from the side
neck point, measure across the back

At the front of the neck, measure


straight across from raglan seam to
raglan seam.

At a specified distance down from the


apex point, measure the width of the

At the back of the garment, measure


straight across between the centre of
each strap, where the strap is attached
to the body.

Section C – Waist

C1 Waist
(tops, dresses & jackets)

With the garment relaxed measure


straight across the waist seam. Refer
to the garment spec for the specified
distance down from the under arm,
centre back neck or side neck point.

C2 Waist (trousers, jeans, skirts


& shorts)

With the waistband relaxed measure


along the centre of the waistband. The
top edges of the front and back of the
waistband must be level and the
waistband fastened. Where there is no
waistband measure along the top edge
of the garment or at the natural
waistline if this is narrower.

C3 Elasticated waist
(tops, dresses & jackets)

Extend the elasticated waist until the


fabric is flat. Measure straight across
the waist seam.

C4 Elasticated waist (trousers,


jeans, skirts & shorts)

Extend the elasticated waist until the


fabric is flat. Measure straight across
the waist seam. Do not over extend.

C5 Hem or welt relaxed

Measure straight across the middle of


the band with the hem or welt relaxed.

C6 Hem or welt extended

Measure straight across the middle of


the band with the hem or welt fully
extended. Do not over extend.

Measure from the top of the waistband


to the bottom of the waistband.

Section D – Hips and Seat

D1 High hip (trousers, jeans,


skirts & shorts)

With garment lying flat and waist at


natural position, measure down the
specified on the size spec at the front
of the garment under the waistband.
Measure down the same distance at
the side seams. Measure from the side
seam to the centre point and then
across to the side seam. If there is no
waistband measure down from the top
of the garment to the natural waistline
and then down the specified amount
on the spec.

D2 Low hip (trousers, jeans,


skirts & shorts)

With garment lying flat and waist at


natural position, measure down the
specified on the size spec at the front
of the garment under the waistband.
Measure down the same distance at
the side seams. Measure from the side
seam to the centre point and then
across to the side seam. If there is no
waistband measure down from the top
of the garment to the natural waistline
and then down the specified amount
on the spec.

Section D – Hips and Seat

D3 High hip (dresses, blouses &


jackets)

Measure down the side seams from


the natural waistline or the side neck
point the specified amount on the spec.
Measure straight across the waist with
the garment lying flat. If garment is
pleated, measure the high hip with
pleats closed.

D4 Low hip (dresses, blouses &


jackets )

Measure down the side seams from


the natural waistline or the side neck
point the specified amount on the spec.
Measure straight across the waist with
the garment lying flat. If garment is
pleated, measure the low hip with
pleats open.

Section E – Hems and Sweeps

E1 Hem width

Measure straight across the bottom of


the garment hem between the side
seams. If the garment has side seam
splits, a vent or a shirt tail, measure
straight across the bottom with the
splits or vent closed and garment flat.

E1 Hem width (circular or full


sweep)

If the sweep width is very full refer to


the size spec for guidance. The
measurement maybe taken on the
curve or the straight.

Section F – Shoulder and Yokes

F1 Across shoulder

Measure straight across the back of


the garment, shoulder point to shoulder
point.

F2 Shoulder seam

Measure from the side neck point to


the shoulder point along the shoulder
seam. If there is no shoulder seam or it
is dropped forward measure on the
natural shoulder crease.

F3 Length of saddle seam

Measure from the neckline to the


beginning of the saddle, front or back.

F4 Width between saddle seams

Measure between the front and back


saddle seams at the widest part.

F5 Yoke Depth

Measure at the centre back of the


garment down from the neckline to the
seam of the yoke.

Section G – Sleeve Lengths

G1 Sleeve length from shoulder

Measure from the shoulder and along


the top edge of the sleeve. Refer to the
specification for details to exclude or
include cuff or trim.

G2 Sleeve length from centre


back neck

Measure from the centre back


neckline, straight to the end of the
sleeve. Refer to the specification for
details to exclude or include cuff or
trim.

G3 Sleeve length from side neck


point

Measure from the side neck point,


straight to the end of the sleeve. Refer
to the specification for details to
exclude or include cuff or trim.

G4 Sleeve length from underarm

Measure from the bottom of the


armhole along the underarm seam to
the end of the sleeve. Refer to the
specification for details to exclude or
include cuff or trim.

G5 Shoulder angle

Extend an imaginary line out from the


side neck point. At this point measure
down to the shoulder point with the
garment lying flat.

Section H – Armholes

H1 Depth of armhole at centre


back

At the back of the garment, measure


from the centre of the neckline to a
point level with the bottom or the
armholes.

H2 Armhole straight

Measure straight down from the top of


the armhole / shoulder (on the natural
shoulder position) to the bottom of the
armhole.

H3 Armhole curve front

At the front of the garment, measure


the armhole along the curve from the
shoulder seam to the bottom of the
armhole.

H4 Armhole curve back

At the back of the garment, measure


the armhole along the curve from the
shoulder seam to the bottom of the
armhole.

H5 Raglan front

At the front of the garment, measure


along the raglan seam from the
neckline to the bottom of the armhole.

H6 Raglan back

At the back of the garment, measure


along the raglan seam from the
neckline to the bottom of the armhole.

Section H – Armholes

H7 Strap length

Measure the strap from the point


where the strap is attached to the front
and then to the point where the strap is
attached to the back of the garment.
For adjustable straps, adjust the strap
to a 5cm depth.

H8 Strap width

Measure the width of the strap at the


point specified on the specification.

Section J – Sleeve Widths and Cuffs

J1 Sleeve bicep

Measure bicep 2.5cm down from the


armhole straight across the width of
the sleeve. Measure at right angles to
the fold line. For knitwear measure the
bicep at the widest part down from the
armhole.

J2 Half sleeve width

Fold the sleeve in half so that the end


of the sleeve or the cuff is level with
the bottom or the armhole. Measure
across the fold line.

J3 Sleeve opening

Measure along the finished edge of the


sleeve.

J4 Sleeve opening: Cuff or welt


opening

Measure along the finished edge of the


sleeve. If the garment has a cuff,
measure the cuff when it is closed.

J5 Cuff / Welt depth

Measure from the cuff opening edge to


where the cuff or welt joins the sleeve.

Section K – Necklines and Collars

K1 Back neck width

Measure between the shoulder seams,


from side neck point to side neck point.
If the shoulder seam sits toward the
front or back, measure on the natural
shoulder crease line. Refer to
specification to include or exclude neck
trims.

K2 Neck circumference

Measure the neckline from the centre


of the button to the centre of the button
hole. If there is no collar, measure
along the finished neck edge.

K3 Neck stretch

Extend the neck with the bottom of the


rib trim or collar edges level. Measure
straight across the finished edge.

K4 Front neck drop

Measure down the front neck from an


imaginary line between the side neck
points. Measure to the centre front
neck seam. Exclude neck trims.

K5 Back neck drop

Measure down the back neck from an


imaginary line between the side neck
points. Measure to the centre back
neck seam. Exclude neck trims.

Section K – Necklines and Collars

K6 Neck opening
(funnel or roll neck)

With the garment lying flat, measure


along the top of the neck opening,
across the inside edge.

K7 Break point for lapel and


collar

Measure from the side neck point at


the shoulder seam to the centre of the
first button hole. If the shoulder seam
sits towards the front or the back of the
body, measure from the side neck
points natural crease line.

K8 Collar length
(formal jackets with lapels)

Measure along the attaching seam of


the collar.

K9 Gorge point to lapel point

Measure from the collar gorge to the


lapel point.

K10 Collar point to collar point

Measure the collar length from the


point to point.

K11 Collar point

Measure the length from the collar


point to where it is attached to the
collar stand.

K12 Tie space


With the garment face up measure the
distance between the collars where it
joins onto the stand at the front.
Measure when the collar is buttoned
up and the button is at the far end of
the buttonhole.

K13 Collar spread

With the garment face up and the top


button at the far end of the buttonhole,
measure the distance between the
collar points. Refer to spec for
guidance if the measurement is taken
on the flat or when worn.

K14 Collar depth at centre back

At the centre back of the collar


measure the depth from the outside
collar edge to the collar stand.

K15 Collar stand depth at centre


back

At the centre back of the collar stand


measure the depth down to the neck
seam.

K16 Neck trim depth

Measure from the outer edge of the


neck trim to the neck seam.

K17 Lapel Length

Measure the lapel at 90 degrees from


the collar break line to the lapel point.

Section L – Leg Widths and Leg Openings

L1 Thigh width

Measure across the trouser or short


leg 2.5cm down from the crotch seam.
Ensure that you measure at right
angles to the inside leg seam. The
inside leg seam and the outside leg
seams are level at the hem.

L2 Knee width

At a specified distance down from the


crotch seam, measure across the
trouser leg. Ensure that you measure
at right angles to the inside leg seam.
The inside leg seam and the outside
leg seams are level at the hem. If the
measurement down from the crotch
seam is not specified on the
specification the measurement should
be taken half way down the inside leg
seam.

L3 Leg opening
(trousers and shorts)

Measure along the top of the fabric at


the bottom of the leg. The front and
back edges of the trouser or short must
be level.

Section M – Rises

M1 Front rise

The waistband to the crotch seam,


following the curve of the rise. If there
is no waistband measure from the top
of the garment down to the crotch
seam, following the curve of the rise.

M2 Back rise

Measure from under the waistband to


the crotch seam, following the curve of
the rise. If there is no waistband,
measure from the top of the garment
down to the crotch seam, following the
curve of the rise.

M3 Centre front neckline to


crotch

Measure from the top edge of the


neckline down to the crotch seam.
Follow the curve of the rise.

Bodysuits

Fold the garment flat and in half along


the centre front. Measure along the
body following the curve from the
neckline to the crotch seam or
opening.

Section M – Rises

M4 Centre back neckline to


crotch

Measure from the top edge of the


neckline down to the crotch seam.
Follow the curve of the rise.

Bodysuits

Fold the garment flat and in half along


the centre back. Measure along the
body following the curve from the
neckline to the crotch seam or
opening.

Section N – Suspenders
N1 Waist relaxed

Measure along the top edge of the suspenders


open. Refer to the spec to include or exclude
the closure.

N2 Waist extended

Measure along the top edge of the suspenders


extended. Refer to the spec to include or
exclude the closure.

N3 Depth of centre front

Measure from the top of the waist down to the


bottom edge at the centre front.

N4 Front waist to apex

Measure from the top of the waist at the centre


front to the top of the front suspender strap.

N5 Back suspender to centre back

Measure along the curve from the back


suspender strap to the centre back of the belt.
Refer to the spec to include or exclude the
closure.

N6 Back suspender to front suspender

Measure along the curve between the front


and the back suspender straps.

N7 Suspender elastic length (back)

Measure the total length of the back elastic


strap (adjusted by 3cm), excluding suspender
ends.

N8 Suspender elastic length (front)

Measure the total length of the front elastic


strap (adjusted by 3cm), excluding suspender
ends.

Section P – Bustier and Bras


P1 Cross bust seam

Measure across the cup seam from


the underarm edge to the bridge
seam.

P2 Cup length

Measure the cup vertically down the


centre from the top edge to the
bottom of the cup.

P3 Top cup depth

At the halfway point along the top


edge top of the cup, measure the
depth from the top edge to the cross
bust seam.

P4 Under cup depth

At the halfway point along the cross


bust seam, measure the depth from
the seam to the wire casing. If there is
no wire casing measure to the bottom
of the cup seam.

P5 Centre front bridge


(top edge)

Measure between the cups at the top


edge of the bridge.

P6 Centre front bridge


(bottom edge)

Measure between the cups at the


bottom edge of the bridge.

P7 Centre front bridge depth

Measure the depth of the bridge


through the centre front.

P8 Underwire casing

Measure along the outside edge of the


wire casing, from the centre front to the
underarm.

P9 Front seam to the bridge

Measure from the front seam along the


edge of the cup to the bridge seam.
Follow the curve of the cup seam.

P10 Wire play

Measure from the end of the wire at


the underarm to the bottom of the
bartack. The wire must be pushed up
to the centre front bartack.

P11 Back wing

Measure along the bottom edge of the


back wing from the seam or casing
seam to the closure. Refer to the spec
to include or exclude the closure. The
bra must be open flat.

P12 Cradle / wing length

Measure along the bottom edge of the


cradle and the wing, from the centre
seam under the bust. The bra must be
open flat.

P13 Cradle length

Measure along the bottom edge of the


bra, from the centre front of the bridge
to the centre seam under the bust. The
bra must be open flat.

P14 Cradle depth

Measure down centre seam from the


bust to the bottom of the cradle.

P15 Body width relaxed

Measure along the bottom edge of the


bra open. Refer to the specification to
include or exclude the closure.

P16 Body width extended

Measure along the bottom edge of the


bra extended. The bra must be open.
Refer to the spec to include or exclude
the closure.

P17 Bottom edge of wing

Measure from the wire casing to the


back closure. The bra must be open.
P17A
Refer to the specification to include or
exclude the closure.

P17A Side seam, depth of wing

P18 Upper edge of wing &


underarm

Measure from the apex to the back


strap. The bra must be open.

Measure from the apex to the casing.

P20 Underarm apex

Measure along the top edge from the


cup casing to the back closure. Refer
to the specification to include or
exclude the closure.

P21 Backstrap to back closure

Measure along the top edge from the


back strap to the back closure. Refer to
the specification to include or exclude
the closure.

P22 Front fabric strap length

Measure at the point where the strap


joins the top of the cup to the end of
the fabric or the fold at the ring.

Measure along the side back panel


seam from the top edge to the bottom
edge.

P24 Width at back panels

For garments without a centre back


fastenings measure along the tip edge

top edge to the bottom edge.

P26 Top back width

Measure along the top edge from the


side of the cup to the back closure.
Refer to the specification to include or
exclude the closure.

the strap attachment.

P28 Neckline (front)

Measure along the top edge of the cup.

P30 Cup bottom width relaxed

Measure at the bottom of the cup along


the seam. Ensure that the garment is
lying open and flat.

P31 Dart length

Measure the finished length of the dart


from the bottom of the cup seam to the
top of the dart.

P32 Cup dart position from the


centre front

Measure from the centre front of the


bra to the dart. Stretch the bra cup until
it is flat. Do not over stretch.

P33 Cup bottom width extended

Measure at the bottom of the cup along


the seam. Extended the cup until it lies
flat but do not over stretch.

Section Q – Briefs, Bodies and Thongs

Q1 Side seam depth

Measure down the side seam from the


top of the waist elastic or casing, to the
leg opening. Included leg elastic trim.

Q2 Side elastic length

Measure the distance between the


front and back panels with the elastic
relaxed.

Q3 Crotch length or liner length


Fold the crotch or liner lengthways with
the edges of the leg opening level.
Measure along the bottom of the curve.

Measure along the front crotch seam


between the leg openings. For
garments without a crotch panel
measure the width at the seam on the
Q4 natural fold.

Q5 Waist relaxed - briefs

With the waistline of the garment


relaxed measure along the top edge of
the casing or the elastic. Ensure that
the top of the front and back waistband
are level.

Q6 Waist extended - briefs

With the waistline of the garment


extended measure along the top edge
of the casing or the elastic. Ensure that
the top of the front and back waistband
are level and do not over stretch.

Q7 Crotch width (centre)

Measure the crotch seam across at the


narrowest point. To find the narrowest
point fold the front of the crotch in half
toward the back crotch seam.

Q9 Back rise - thong

Measure from the crotch seam to the


top of the waist or the elastic.

Measure from the crotch seam to the


top of the waist or the elastic extended.
Don not over stretch.

Q11 Front rise – brief

Fold the garment at the centre front


and the centre back so that the
garment lies sideways. Measure along
the fabric following the curve. Measure
from the top of the waistband or the
elastic to the crotch seam.

Q12 Back rise - brief

Fold the garment at the centre front


and the centre back so that the
garment lies sideways. Measure along
the fabric following the curve. Measure
from the top of the waistband or the
elastic to the crotch seam.

Q13 Front leg opening

Measure along the curve of the front


leg. Measure from the side seam to the
front crotch seam or crotch opening if
there is a fastening.

Q14 Back leg opening

Measure along the curve of the back


leg. Measure from the side seam to the
back crotch seam or crotch opening if
there is a fastening.

Q15 Front leg opening extended

Measure along the extended front leg


opening. Measure from the side seam
to the front crotch seam or crotch
opening. The crotch must be closed if
there is a fastening. Do not over
stretch.

Q16 Back leg opening extended

Measure along the extended back leg


opening. Measure from the side seam
to the front crotch seam or crotch
opening. The crotch must be closed if
there is a fastening. Do not over
stretch.

Q17 Width at top of leg

Measure straight across between the


top of the leg openings. Where
applicable measure down the distance
from the side neck point for a body or
for swimwear. For briefs measure
down from the top of the waist.

Q18 Front coverage

Measure between the leg openings


(including the trim) a specified distance
up from the crotch seam or natural fold
at the crotch.

Q19 Back coverage

Measure between the leg openings


(including the trim) a specified distance
up from the crotch seam or natural fold
at the crotch.

Measure under the waistband casing


or elastic at the centre front. Ensure
the measurement is taken with the
elastic extended.

Q21 Front pouch width at crotch

Measure along the seam at the crotch.

Q22 Saddle back width at waist

Measure under the waistband casing


or elastic at the back. Ensure the
measurement is taken with the elastic

From the centre front of the garment,


measure across the top edge of
garment to the first dart position. If the

Section T – Socks

T1 Foot length

Measure from the end of the toe


closure to the edge of the heel in line
with the heel closure.

T2 Leg length

Measure from the edge of the heel in


line with the heel closure to the top of
the welt.

T3 Across foot

Measure across the width of the middle


of the foot (relaxed and extended).

T4 Across leg

Measure across the width of the


middle of the leg (relaxed and
extended).

T5 Across welt

Measure straight across the welt


(relaxed and stretched).

T6 Welt depth

Measure from the top of the welt to the


bottom of the well.

Section T – Socks

T7 Sock fitting

The sock must be pulled onto the fit


board.

T8 Sock fitting (without elastane)

If the sock does not contain elastane


the heel must be gripped and pulled to
point ‘A’ (position 2).

T9 Sock fitting (with elastane)

If the sock does contain elastane the


heel must be gripped and pulled to
point ‘B’ (position 3).

To measure points T7, T8 & T9 a


‘TS’ sock board must be used.

U1 Waistband or welt depth

Note: Take this measurement before


stretching the garment. Measure from
the top edge to the year change line at
the bottom of the waistband or welt.

U2 Volumetric stretch
measurement

To take this measurement you should


put the garment onto an 11 inch
volumetric leg form. The garment must
be smoothed and straightened by
pulling it downward three times (with
dry hands).

U3 Volumetric body (tights)

To take this measurement put the body


section of the tights over a finned body
form. Gently ease the fabric evenly
around the body form until the
waistband is straight and the yarn
change lines are level with the zero
mark. Take a reading from the body at
the top edge of the waistband. For
tights with a penal gusset, position this
section over the finned side for the
form.

U4 Waistband or welt (stretched)

Place your thumbs inside the


waistband or the welt. Stretch the
fabric and take the flat measurement.
A minimum measurement must be
achieved.

U5 Body rise (stretched – tights)

Pinch the seam at the crotch and the


bottom of the waistband, stretch and
measure.

U6 Across sea (stretched –


tights)

Find the halfway between the


waistband and the crotch Pinch the
sides at this level and stretch. Measure
between these points. A minimum
measurement must be achieved.

U7 Mid thigh (stretched)

Find a major point on the thigh. Pinch


each side at this level and stretch.
Measure between these points. A
minimum measurement must be
achieved.

U8 Ankle (stretched)

Pinch each side and stretch. Measure


between these points. A minimum
measurement must be achieved.

U9 Toe depth

Pinch the yarn change line and the toe


seam. Stretch the measure between
these points. A minimum measurement
must be achieved.

V1 Front hood opening

Measure the length from the peak of


the hood to the centre front of the
neck.

V2 Hood over length

Measure the length of the hood long


the curve, from the front peak down to
the centre back neck.

V3 Hood depth

Measure across the hood, flat, at the


widest part or the halfway point.

Measure under band from the centre


front opening to the stitch line.

X2 Fly length

Measure down from under the


waistband to the end of the fly opening.
Where there is no waistband measure
down from the top edge of the
garment.

Y1 Belt length (relaxed)

Measure from the centre of the buckle


to the furthest point at the other end of
the belt.

Y2 Belt length to centre eyelet

Measure from the middle of the centre


eyelet to the centre of the buckle. (The
number of eyelets should be specified
on the size specification).

Y3 Belt eyelet spacing

Measure the distance between the


centre of two neighbouring eyelets.

Section Z – Zip Lengths

Z1 Zip length
(trousers, shorts, skirts)

Measure the finished length of the zip


on top of the garment. Where there is
no waistband measure down from the
top edge of the garment.

Z2 Zip Length (jackets, tops)

Measure the finished length of the zip


between the top and the bottom stops.
