Career Goals

Teaching is a profession unlike any other. It is an ever evolving field that requires

continuous, constant learning for anyone who wishes to be a successful educator. Over the next

five years, I will be beginning my journey as an educator and there are several goals that I have

constructed for myself that will ensure my development and overall effectiveness as an educator.

The following is the list of goals that I have set out for myself for the next five years, along with

a rationale as to why these goals are important and necessary to my professional development.

1. Obtain a teaching position at a school that shares similar values and ideals of education

that I too hold.

a. Finding a good fit between teacher and school is essential in the development of

my own skills. This will allow me to hone the skills that I (and the school I work

for) will need in order to best serve my students. This will also allow me to feel a

sense of belonging as a new educator.

2. Begin my first year of teaching by fostering an inclusive environment within my

classroom so all students feel accepted and validated.

a. In order to ensure that my students are effectively learning at the highest level

they are able to, I need to foster an environment that allows them to do so.

Fostering an inclusive environment in my first year of a teacher therefore, will set

a foundation for how this can be done every year.

3. Complete my first full year of teaching.

a. The first year of being a teacher will undoubtedly be a roller coaster of emotions.

There will be plenty of highs and lows and it will then be my responsibility to

reflect on how I can improve my own teaching for the benefit of my students.
4. Connect with other teachers and form a community of educators that can be used to

support one another through the beginning of our careers.

a. Connecting and networking with other new teachers is a way in which we can all

have support while navigating a new career. Developing a support group will help

with my own pedagogy and needs while simultaneously allowing me to support

and assist other teachers whenever they may need help.

5. Continuously reflect and adapt as I progress through the first five years of my teaching

career.

a. As mentioned before, the first five years of teaching will contain several ups and

downs. Being able to openly and honestly reflect on my own performance as an

educator will ensure that I am always improving my skills so I can be a teacher

that my students will be excited to learn from.
