Procedure Table 2 Resin properties of PC-17-5N

1. Equipment: A 3-liter reactor equipped with mechanical Hydroxyl number, mg KOH/g of resin 45–55
stirrer, heated packed column, distillation condenser, Acid number, mg KOH/g of resin 5–10
thermocouples, nitrogen stream, and accessories needed Gel permeation chromatography
for computer control. Weight average molecular weight, Mw 9,000–9,600
2. Charge reactants, catalyst, and excess glycol to the Number average molecular weight, Mn 2,700–2,900
reactor purged with nitrogen. Heat gradually to melt Tg, glass transition temperature 60°–63°C
glycol and begin stirring when possible. Maintain a (DSC, 2nd cycle, midpoint)
nitrogen stream and stirrer speed @ 300 rpm. Melt viscosity, cone and plate @ 200°C, poise 25–30

3. Set heat control as follows:

25°–180°C over 1.3 hours
180°–235°C over 6 hours
235°C hold for 8 hours
Remove water from the reaction through heated
column and distillation condenser.

4. Cook to acid number 5–10 (mg KOH/g resin) and cone

and plate melt viscosity @ 200°C of 25–30 poise.

• If self-blocked isophorone diisocyanate (Vestagon™

BF-1540) is used for this formulation, higher extrusion
temperature and 190°C (375°F) x 20 min cure are
necessary.
• A 30-mm twin-screw extruder is used with Zone 1 and
Zone 2 set @ 100°C and 110°C respectively.
• Powder particle size average is 25 microns; maximum is
74 microns.
• Powder caking stability @ 40°C for 3 days is good.
