Task 2. Journal 1 & 2 Combined Journal Assignment
EDUC 280 Journal 1 & 2 Combined
Task 1. Classroom Management

Question 1 – Do you think your teacher has successfully created a productive learning environment? Why or
why not?
I think the teacher that I have observed has successfully created a productive learning environment. This is
because everyone talks nicely to each other and the teacher never has to raise her voice. The teacher uses a lot
of technology so students are able to visually look at what is happening next and can learn from some of the
technology that is used in the classroom. Students are very engaged in learning by moving and using hand
motions to learn.

Question 2 – What techniques does the teacher use to keep students actively involved in academic activities?
Techniques that the teacher uses to keep students engaged is centers. Student have time with the teacher,
hands on activity (sometimes with their peers), and individual work. Each center only lasts for about 15 mins so
students do not get bored from what they are doing. When it is a really nice day outside especially after the
winter time, the teacher will try to find a lesson that they can do outside to switch up the learning scenery.
Another thing the teacher does is when they are doing their writing in centers, students can use different color
writing utensils so they can choose a way to learn that they will like.

Question 3 – How is your teachers “withitness?” In other words, do they have command of the classroom? Do
they have great systems of classroom management in place?
The teacher that I observed would clap and the students would clap back to show she has their attention.
Another thing the teacher did was keep the class days in a similar routine as all the other days. This way the
students are able to know exactly what has to be done and how it typically works. Student then don’t get off
task as easy. This helps classroom management be in place.

Question 4 – What types of “punishments” are used in your classroom?
The only kind of “punishment” that was used in the classroom was staying in a little taking time away from
recess if a student didn’t finish their assignment. If students are talking too much to their classmate the teacher
will move their desk later to solve the problem. If students were to be getting in a lot of trouble the teacher
would eventually take bigger steps to talking to parents.

Question 5 – How or where are the rules posted in your classroom? How were they created? By the students
or the teacher?
There aren’t necessarily rules posted in the classroom but there are G.R.I.T. expectations posted that show
students the right way to behave. Give respect, responsibility, integrity independence, and teamwork. These
were made by the teacher.

Task 2. Curriculum
Question 1 – Give an example of when the teacher used integrated curriculum across subjects (i.e. combining
science and language arts)
When the students were learning about stars and constellations, they got to draw their own constellation then
wrote about it. This incorporates science and writing. The students were able to be creative and practice their
writing while learning about science.

Question 2 – Give an example of when the teacher used hidden curriculum.

When a student is kind to another or helps out, they earn grit bucks. This teaches students that doing good in life
is being a good citizen and can be rewarding. Students also get donut dollars for doing all their online
assignments. This teaches students to have a good work ethic. Also, every morning the students have some sort
of new way they have to say hi to their peers. This teaches students social behavior.

Question 3 – Does your teacher used differentiated instruction?

The teacher uses differentiated instruction during centers. She groups the students that need a little more help
together, the proficient together, and the students need more of a challenge together. This is so the teacher can
have one focus on how much or how little she needs to help a group.

Question 4 – Can you tell what kind of learner the teacher is from his/her instructional preferences?
The teacher uses a lot of visuals like PowerPoints and video so students can see what they are about to learn,
what their instructions are, and follow along with what they are learning. She also likes peers to help each other
learn when they are stuck with something before they go straight to the teacher. This is so student can learn in
different ways than just how the teacher teaches the curriculum.

Question 5 – Do you think the teacher adapts the curriculum to the types of learners in the classroom?
The teacher does a wonderful job adapting the curriculum to the types of learners in the classroom. Especially
with teaching first grade, they don’t like to sit in the same spot all the time. She allows students to move around
6
and switches different ways she teaches to keep them engaged. The students in the classroom love videos and
working with their partners.

Question 6 – Does your teacher like the curriculum he/she is teaching?

The teacher does like the curriculum overall. She likes how there is some flexibility when it comes to how she
can teach it and different ways she can teach. There will always be some things of a curriculum that you don’t
love. She doesn’t love the order of phonics that she has to teach and wishes she could switch that around.

Question 7 – What would they like to see added in the future?

The teacher would like to see social/emotional curriculum added to children’s education especially from this
year. If this was taught, students would be able to learn how to handle some emotions and know how to get
help that is needed. She also wishes that there were people for behavioral support for students. Some students
have very bad behavioral issues but they don’t know how to help correct it. This one student cause issues for the
whole class then and it is hard on the teacher to put all there focus into that one student and not all. Having
behavioral support would be very beneficial.

Task 3. Technology

Question 1 – What kind of technology was used in the class(es) you observed? Was it effective?
The teacher I observed uses a lot of technology in the right way. She had a PowerPoint for every day of class so
students could follow along and see what they will be doing. It is a great way for transitions as well. Students
also get to watch videos for learning and listen to books on video. The students absolutely love this especially
because they are growing up in an era with a lot of technology surrounding them. One thing I love that the
teacher would do was show a video with a song and the character would do dance moves or jogging in the
video, the students would follow along and this helped them get their brain going and their bodies moving in the
morning.

Question 2 – What type of technology might you use when you start your teaching career?
I will definitely use fun visual PowerPoints to engage the students and I really like engaging videos to help
students learn.

Question 3 – Do you think it is harder or easier to incorporate technology into your classroom?
I feel like with this generation growing up with technology and especially with covid and classes having to be
online, technology has become so much easier to use now because teachers have had to adapt to using it.
Obviously, technology doesn’t always like to cooperate with us though!

Task 4. Diversity

Question 1 – How diverse was your class(es) you observed?

The class I observed was diverse especially when it came to the levels of knowledge the students were at. There
were some students that were very good at all subjects, some the lacked in certain subjects, and others that
struggle every day in class.

Question 2 – What did your mentor/teacher do (or not do) to create a diverse classroom?
During centers, students were with different classmates so they could learn how to work together. The wasn’t
much that the teach had to do to create a diverse classroom. Because of covid students can’t be mixed together
too much.
