ETHICS
ACTIVITY 3
LESSON 3: MORAL STANDARDS
Are clothes a matter of pure aesthetic taste, or does it make sense for clothes to become a subject
in the discussion of ethics? Why? How about other forms of adornment such as tattoos and
piercings?
Clothes are used for protection for controlling body temperature such as when cold
times, sweater, pajamas, jacket and etc., are suitable. Clothes are also for fashion, for modesty
and decency in terms with professionalism or for uniformity such as schools or office
uniforms. Clothes has become an important necessity for us to have. With regards to an ethical
discussion, clothes are not something to discuss with, they are used only for aesthetics,
sometimes as a compliance to an etiquette, but not into standards of ethics. Clothes are only an
aesthetic expression but when it is done with the purpose to harm or attack somebody else
with the thought of putting words into it (referring to clothes), such as for political propaganda
or racial profiling, it is now that ethics are becoming part of the discussion. Also, when it is
expressed showing sexuality or engaging someone to have sex with, it affects the moral
standards. Ethically speaking, using clothes as a form of showing thoughts attacking
somebody else or a group's culture, it is innapropriate and ethical consciousness should be
considered.

With regards to tattoos and piercings, they've become well-known in this generation
and became a figurative form of art. They are used as an indication of beauty, customs, or
being part of a certain culture. For example, Polynesians, Maoris, Maya, Incas, and Scots also
tattooed their bodies to indicate their status as part of a clan or caste. In the contrary, tattoos
are sometimes can be ethically discussed due to wrongful decisions made, that an art might
attack someone else's culture, personality, or into the standards of ethics. As to the situation of
Bella Poarch, a tiktok sensation, was criticized due to her tattoo on her arm showing a heart
with rays of red. It was interpreted as an historical flag which symbolizes the war between
Japan and Korea. Korean netizens were very annoyed and frustrated about this and considered
vengeance by attacking Filipino netizens since Bella is a Filipino. Well, for me, tattoos are not
to be considered in the discussion of ethical standards. They are just form of an art the same
with piercings for which it does not affect any moral standards unless it is used in purpose to
attack any aspects that affects morality. Therefore, it is only part of self-expression to their
thoughts, making it an art and permanently be in their bodies, respect to what people decide
for themselves as this can be an indication of beauty, personality and culture.
