BEED III-2
Glossary of Terms
Achievement Test - refer to assessments which scores are often used to determine the level of
instruction for which a student is prepared. High achievement scores generally indicate that a
level of mastery of grade-level material has been reached, and that the student is prepared for
advanced instruction.
Aptitude Tests - a test designed to determine a person's ability in a particular skill or field of
knowledge.
Assessment - refers to the wide variety of methods or tools that educators use to evaluate,
measure, and document the academic readiness, learning progress, skill acquisition, or
educational needs of students.
Criterion referenced - tests and assessments are designed to measure student performance
against a fixed set of predetermined criteria or learning standards—i.e., concise, written
descriptions of what students are expected to know and be able to do at a specific stage of their
education.
Evaluation - is a systematic determination of a subject's merit, worth and significance, using
criteria governed by a set of standards. It can assist an organization, program, design, project or
any other intervention or initiative to assess any aim, realizable concept/proposal, or any
alternative, to help in decision-making; or to ascertain the degree of achievement or value in
regard to the aim and objectives and results of any such action that has been completed.
Group test - a mental or achievement test (as the Army General Classification Test) designed
to be administered to many individuals at once.
Individual test - given to one person at a time. Individual cognitive and achievement tests are
administered to gather extensive information about each student cognitive functioning and
his/her ability to process and perform specific tasks.
Intelligence test - a test designed to measure the ability to think and reason rather than acquired
knowledge.
Measurement – set of procedures and principles for how to use the procedures in educational
tests and assessments.
Non standardized test - looks at an individual's performance, and does not produce scores that
allow us to compare that performance to another's. It allows us to obtain specific information
about the student, and this can be in different formats.
Norm referenced - refers to standardized tests that are designed to compare and rank test takers
in relation to one another. Norm-referenced tests report whether test takers performed better or
worse than a hypothetical average student, which is determined by comparing scores against the
performance results of a statistically selected group of test takers, typically of the same age or
grade level, who have already taken the exam.
Objective test - a test designed to exclude as far as possible the subjective element on the part
of both those taking and grading it by presenting a number of factual questions to be answered
by one word or a check mark instead of verbal expression and organization of material.
Oral test - is a practice in many schools and disciplines in which an examiner poses questions to
the student in spoken form. The student has to answer the question in such a way as to
demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the subject to pass the exam.
Performance test - a test requiring little or no use of language, the test materials being designed
to elicit manual or behavioral responses rather than verbal ones.
Personality test - is a tool used to assess human personality. Personality testing and assessment
refer to techniques designed to measure the characteristic patterns of traits that people exhibit
across various situations.
Sociometric test - is an instrument which examines social structures through the measurement of
the attractions and repulsions which take place between the individuals within a group.
Standardized test - any form of test that requires all test takers to answer the same questions, or
a selection of questions from common bank of questions, in the same way, and that is scored in a
“standard” or consistent manner, which makes it possible to compare the relative performance of
individual students or groups of students.
Subjective test - is evaluated by giving an opinion. It can be compared with an objective test,
which has right or wrong answers and so can be marked objectively.
Testing - A testing problem or situation is very difficult to deal with and shows a lot about
the character of the person who is dealing with it. Testing is the activity of testing something or
someone in order to find out information.
Trade or vocational test - A trade test is a test used to assess proficiency and skill level of an
individual in any number of skilled trades. A trade test is an assessment of an individual and
whether or not this person has achieved certain levels of knowledge within the context of a
specific trade.
Written test - Written tests are tests that are administered on paper or on a computer (as
an eExam). A test taker who takes a written test could respond to specific items by writing or
typing within a given space of the test or on a separate form or document.
