Name of the Experiment: Preparation of tooth paste.


Principle: Toothpaste is a paste or gel dentifrice used with a toothbrush to clean and maintain
the health of teeth. Toothpaste is used to promote oral hygiene. It is an abrasive that aids in
removing dental plaque and food from the teeth, assists in suppressing halitosis, and delivers
active ingredients to help prevent dental caries and gum disease.
Toothpaste has some essential quality they are:
➢ Homogeneity: No consistency variation
➢ Viscosity: Optimum to minimize separation
➢ Specific gravity: Shouldn’t be less than 1.5
➢ PH: Should be slightly alkaline
➢ Taste: Pleasant and sweet test
➢ Last: Up to the mask
➢ Foaming: Adequate
➢ Stabilizing: Stable up to 2 years
➢ Flavor and color: Should be decent and color

Ingredients:
Several ingredients are used for formulation of toothpaste. They are-
➢ Chalk powder is used as abrasive material that remove food debris and residual from teeth.
➢ Soap is used as a foaming agent that clean the teeth by making the foam.
➢ Flavoring agent and gum

Formula:

Calcium carbonate 5.6 g
Sodium lauryl sulphate 0.1 g
Glycerin 2.2 g
Acacia 0.15 g
Saccharine 0.01 g
Water 1.95 ml
Preservatives q.s
Coloring agent q.s
Flavor (menthol) q.s

Procedure:
1. Chalk powder and water was mixed homogenously.
2. Glycol was accelerated by heat and agitation
3. Then the detergent, gum, saccharine and flavoring oils was added term by term with
continuous string
4. Then the paste was powdered into a fresh and suitable tube.

Precaution:
➢ Properly wash and clean all equipment’s before starting the experiments
➢ Trituration should be done uniformly

Justification of toothpaste:
For white, bright and sharp teeth, impart cool and freshness inside mouth muscles.
