[An actuators an output device forthe conversion of supply energy into useful work. The output
‘signal is controled by the conto system, and the actuator responds to the contra signal via
the contol element. The pneumatic actuator can be described under two groups, inear and
rotary.

Single Acting Cylinde
‘single acting cylinder develops thst one rection only. The piston rod is returned by a
{ited spring or by extemal force from the load or spring. Single acing cylinders are used for
‘damping, marking or ejecting. They have a somewhat lower air consumption compared with the
‘equivalent size of double acting cylinder. However there isa reduction in thrust cu to the
‘opposing spring force, anc so a larger bore maybe required. Also accommodating the spring
results in longoroveral length and limited stroke Fength

‘The constuction ofa doutle acting cylinder is shown. The barrel is normaly made of seamless
{ube which may be hardcoated and super-nished onthe inner working surface to minimize
‘wear and fron. The end caps maybe aluminium alloy or malleable ron casting held in placeby

Pneumatic eyindors are capable of vor high speed and considerable shock force can be
developed on tle end of a stoke, Sle elders fe have fixed wustioni ie rubber
buffers, o absorb the shock and prevent internal damage tothe cylinder. On larger cyiners,
the impact effect can be absorbed by an air cushion that decelerates the piston over the lasr
portion ofthe stroke. This cushion traps some ofthe exhausting ar near the end ofthe stroke
before allowing ito bled off more slowy through an adjustable needle valve.

“The rapped aii compressed to a relatively high pressure which brakes the inertia ofthe
piston. When the plston reverses, the cushion seal acts as a check valve to alow air ow tothe
Piston, nowever, rests the airflow and delay the acceleration ofthe piston. The cushioning
stroke should therefore beas short as possible. To deceleates heavy loads or high piston
speeds, an extemal shock absorber is requed. Ifthe piston speed exceeds about $0 mmis an
