 ADJUSTMENT INVENTORY FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

(BY DR. A. K. P. SINHA & DR. R. P. SINGH)

HISTORY
 Adjustment Inventory for College Students (AICS) was constructed & standardized
by Dr. A.K.P. Sinha, Professor Emeritus, Department of Psy, Patna University and
Dr. R.P. Singh, Reader in Education, Patna University, Published by National Psycho-
logical Corporation, Kacheri Ghat, Agra, in 1968.
 In this test the broad categories of home, health, social, emotion, & education were
selected
 In the beginning a list of 201 items was prepared.
 The list was presented to a group of 5 judges & only those items were retained abo
ut which the judges were unanimous for their retention. This led to elimina-tion of 3
5 items out of 201.
HISTORY: CONT
 The remaining 166 items were subjected to item analysis. Item analysis was done
by calculating bi-serial correlation of each item (I) with the total scores on the inve
ntory and (n) with the area total scores. The significance of a bi-serial at .001 level
was fixed as the criterion for retaining an item. This led to the elimination of 64 ite
ms out of 166.
 The final test of 102 item was administered on a randomly selected representative
sample of 2280 (1550 M, 7300 F) students of Patna and Magadh Universities. The C
hisquare test was applied to determine the normality ofthe distributions ofthe sco
res ofthe subjects ofthe two sexes in respect ofthe total inventory as also the five
separate areas of the inventory. The values of Chi-square thus calculated showed t
hat the distributions were not departing significantly from normality.
RELIABILITY
 Coefficient of reliability was determined by (I) split half method (n) Hoyt’s analysis of
variance method (in) K-R Formula 20. Test retest reliability was also determined by
administering the test after a period of 3 weeks on 228 students which is 10 percent
of the total sample.
 Split half - 0.94
 Test retest 0.93
 Hoyt’s method 0.94
 k-R Formula 0.92
VALIDITY
 In item analysis validity coefficients were determined for each item by
bisenal correlation method and only such items were retained which
yielded bisenal correlation which both the criteria (I) total score and (11)
area score, significant at .001 level.
 The inventory was also validated by correlating inventory scores with
Hostel Superintendents ratings. This was studied on a sample of 120
students living in different hostels of Patna University. The hostel
superintendents rated the students on five points scale, namely,
Excellent, Good, Average, Unsatisfactory and Very unsatisfactory in
respect of their adjustment. Product moment coefficient of correlation
between the inventory scores and superintendents rating was obtained
to be 0.58
NORMS
 Percentile norms were computed for both males and females separately
on all five areas i.e.: Home, Health, Social, Emotional and Education &
also was computed as a whole to set the norms
ADMINISTERING
 It is a self administering inventory.
 The examiner should read the instructions given on the first page and the examinees
should also read them silently along with the examiner.
 There is no time limit for answering it. Ordinarily an individual takes 18 minutes in
completing the test.
 Examinees should be instructed to interpret the meaning of the sentences themselves.
However, meaning ofthe difficult words, if any, should be given by me examiner.
 Co operation ofthe examinees in answering the inventory is very essential. The examiner
should assure them that their answers and scores will be treaated with strictest
confidence.
 The examiners should indicate frankly and honestly the purpose ofthe test, if any
question regarding this is raised by the examinees.
 There is no need of telling why letters and numbers are placed before the question. If a
question is asked about these the examiners should tell the meaning of the letters.
