Machine Features

General information
The INDEX ABC machine is a compact turning machine for short turned parts from
the bar.

It is designed as an inclined bed machine with two independent turrets.

The upper turret is intended for mainly internal machining and for machining the cut-
off side, while the lower turret takes over the external machining.

The arrangement of the turrets combines collision-free machining and easy programming
with high tool availability.

The large free space in the working area enables favorable fall of the chips.

The INDEX ABC is the replacement for cam controlled turning automatics.

Headstock
Motorized spindle with air cooled AC-asynchronous motor and direct positioning encoder.
The front bearings are preloaded precision spindle bearings, the rear cylindrical roller
bearings are housed in a tapered bore.

The spindle nose is DIN short taper size 4 or 5.

Advantages of the hollow shaft drive

• no mechanical transmission elements, thus less wear parts, less rotating mass,
shorter spindle tripping times
• smoother running (noise sources: gearbox, drive belt not existing)
• high torsional strength
• improved workpiece quality
• no load on the bearings due to drive belt tension
• enables modular design

Extensions/options
• Locating- and indexing attachment (indexing interval 2,5°)
• C-axis (resolution 1/1000°)

Material chucking
• Hydraulically operated chucking cylinder for dead end and draw type collets.

Stock feed
• Hydraulically operated feeding slide with max. 80 mm stroke

INDEX ABC from machine serial No. 400746

• Disk type turret with 7 radially arranged tool mounting bores Ø 25mm DIN 69880
and a mounting for heavy duty synchro spindle in turret station 8.
Adapters for tools with 1" shank are available. The turret is prepared for the V-plate
system, ref. to tool holder catalogue section: "AA - Toolholder pre-positioning"

INDEX ABC up to machine serial No. 400745

• Disk type turret with 8 radially arranged tool mounting bores Ø 25mm DIN 69880.
Adapters for tools with 1" shank are available.

• Turret indexing in both directions via geneva plate and a hydraulic motor.
Precision locking drive with hydraulic turret clamping.

• The turret does not lift off during indexing, it has direction logic and can be
indexed slowly in setting-up mode.

• The turret slide is guided in linear antifriction bearings.

Machine Features

Extensions/options

• Tool driving attachment for all stations. Max RpM 6000, rating 3,3kW at 25% duty
cycle.

• Synchrospindle for machining the cut-off side, simultaneous machining with the
main spindle. Dead end collets D42 or three-jaw gripper chuck for internal and
external chucking. Chuck jaw stroke 0,6 mm. Chucking diameter (ext.) 75 mm.
Through bore for positive ejection of workpieces.
Hydraulic chucking.
Locating and indexing attachment (Increment 7,5°.)

• Rear end drilling attachment

Three stationary rear end drilling tools are arranged in clockwise direction from the
workspindle center. They are on the pitch circle diameter covered by the synchro
spindle. Machining the rear end is done simultaneously with the machining at the
workspindle. When turret 1 with XZ-axes is fitted, additionally 2 (max.5) tools can
be used. Two of these can be driven tools.

• Coolant supply through the toolholder.

Turret 2
• Turret with 6 symmetrical dovetail tool mounts, in which the tools are adjustable
in Z-direction.
• The head pieces of existing cross slide toolholders can be used.
• Internal coolant supply (OPTION).
• Indexing and clamping same as turret 1.
• Turret optionally with X- or with X/Z-axes.

Extensions/options
• Coolant supply through the tool holder (from machine serial No. 400709)
• Cross drilling attachment
• Thread milling- and polygon generating attachment
An attachment which is driven by a separate AC-motor and an electonic gearbox
(to the main spindle) is mounted adjustably in Z-direction in the dovetail mount of
turret 2.
A second attachment can be mounted at 120° offset.

Feed drives
• Maintenance free AC-asynchronous motors and timing belts.
• Collision protection by built in safety clutches with additional predetermined breaking
safety point.
• The travel measurement system is the encoder of the AC-motor (no reference
point, no emergency stop).
• Linear antifriction bearings.

Machine Features

Hydraulic unit
• Compact pump unit with oil tank integrated in the machine base.
• Pressure accumulator loading unit with valve and pressure restrictor valve.
• Manifold block-system
• Refrigerating unit

Coolant supply
• Integrated in the chip conveyor, thereby thermally insulated arrangement. The
container can be pulled out for cleaning.

Important information on tool change - turret 1

The toolholder can be pulled out after loosening the clamping pad.

When mounting a driven toolholder, the following must be observed!

In order to avoid damage to the bearings in the shank, the clamping
pad must be tightened with a torque of only 36 Nm.
